We are pleased to have the JUNIOR DUCK STAMP ART SHOW with us again! It can be viewed in the ACA Walking Gallery of our Visual Arts building.The Junior Duck Stamp Program is a youth art contest sponsored by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service that is designed to teach youth about waterfowl and their habitat needs. The annual contest is held in all 50 states and U.S. territories and is open to grades kindergarten through 12th grade.This show features 37 pieces of placing artwork submitted by students residing in Alabama, grades K-12. The Alabama “Best of Show” artwork was entered in the National Junior Duck Stamp Contest.Free and open to the public.Normal ACA business hours:Mon-Thurs, 8am-8pmFri, 8am-12pm

The Alabama Center for the Arts is pleased to announce our newest exhibit, Wild and Precious, featuring artists Rebecca Sower and Tonya Gillespie Witt Main Gallery, Visual Arts bldg. Opening Reception:  Tuesday, May 13 from 5:30 – 7:00 pm The exhibit and reception are both free and open to the public. The theme for the show was inspired by a poem titled “A Summer Day” by Mary Oliver, specifically the line “Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?” Wild and Precious will focus on what is wild and precious in life and nature, and also feature a play on the theme of how we choose to live the precious moments of our lives, what we value, and what we want our days and moments to look like. The exhibit will feature work heavily nature-based in theme, specifically North Alabama wildlife, river, and refuge themes.  Running alongside these themes will be symbolic narrative, figurative and portraiture art sharing Sower and Gillespie Witt’s interpretation of the quote from Mary Oliver’s poem. Rebecca Sower is a mixed media artist born in Nashville, but recently relocated near the Tennessee River in North Alabama. She believes art should sing a song and tell a story. Each painting she begins is a new adventure and experiment for her. Sower’s work begins in a very personal way – she scribbles down her thoughts and feelings onto the canvas, her wishes and blessings for the potential collector. From there, things build up layer by layer, a long but rewarding process. She hopes her art compels the viewer to pause and stare a bit, to find secrets and surprises in the layers. Tonya Gillespie Witt grew up in Decatur, Alabama with her mother and three sisters. Through dance lessons when she was young, she learned that she could express her emotion through an art form. She also took delight and inspiration from nature, as being outdoors was her outlet and play place. Her background lends to a connection to nature and sustainability in art and in life. She learned to be creative and inventive, and make things from what she had, repurposing objects and materials. Gillespie Witt received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting/Drawing from Auburn University where she grew to appreciate a love for the weight and gravity of a simple line, and an intuitive application of color. Acrylic is her favored color medium because of its immediacy and speed, and she incorporates treasures, paper, and words buried in the paint, as a record of her day. Each completed painting is a snapshot of her emotions, sensibility and place in time, and is the equivalent of a diary page. Some recurring themes or concepts in her work are the environment (both internal and external), sustainability, natural objects, light and line, and concepts of façade vs reality. The Alabama Center for the Arts is open Monday through Thursday from 8:00 am – 8:00 pm and on Friday from 8:00 am – 12:00 pm.

Calhoun Visual Arts is proud to announce CREATIVE CORNERS 2025! These 1-day summer camp experiences are open to ages 16-99. All are welcome! Mandala Rock Painting with Jax Vadney, Calhoun Art Instructor A mandala in art is a geometric set of patterns, colors, and shapes. The patterns emanate from the center of the mandala. In this half day camp, students will create their own mandala rocks, balancing color and pattern to create beautiful works of art. Every student will take home their original rocks, and a mandala dotting set. No painting experience is required. All materials will be provided, including snacks. Calhoun Visual Arts is proud to announce CREATIVE CORNERS 2025! These 1-day summer camp experiences are open to ages 16-99. All are welcome! Kitchen Lithography with Tara Segars, Calhoun Art Instructor Kitchen Lithography is an eco-friendly method of printmaking and is perfect for those who appreciate creative problem solving. In the workshop, we will learn how to create prints using Coca-Cola, aluminum foil, and various materials that can be found in your own home. This technique was developed by French artist Emilie Aizier (Atelier Kitchen Print) and is an accessible variation of traditional stone lithography. The morning portion of the workshop will include plate set-up, material, and printing demonstrations followed by exercises. The afternoon portion of the workshop will include students creating their own plate and attempting to pull a small edition of the image. While this workshop is suitable for beginners, it is a process that is extremely unpredictable and is recommended for artists who are excited by the unknown. During the week of July 7-11, we are offering Digi Camp for Middle Schoolers in the mornings, and Digi Camp for High Schoolers in the afternoons. These week long, half day camps are bound to bring creativity, energy and excitement for all. Digi Camp: Animation & AI (High School Students) – with Jax Vadney and Kelly Porter, Calhoun Instructors Come learn about Character Creation and Animation Basics. We will explore how AI can be used in creative development and environment creation. You will create a character in multiple poses and environment and blend them all together through Photoshop adjustment layers and blending. At the end of the week, you will have custom framed digital art to take home! All materials are provided, including snacks and camp t-shirt. Calhoun’s Visual Arts faculty is back for Art Explorations 2025!!! This week long, half day summer camp for middle schoolers (ages 11-14) will be creating “Art Around the World” with Tracie Bradford. Ms. Tracie is ready with some fantastic creative experiences for students, including African Tribal Masks, Japanese Sumi-e Ink Painting, Mexican Talavera Tile Designs, and more! Every student will get all needed supplies, daily snacks, and a camp t-shirt.Art Explorations will run each day from July 14-18 at the Alabama Center for the Arts’ Visual Arts Building. The camp starts daily at 8am, and finishes each day at 12pm.
