Calhoun’s Visual Arts faculty is back for Art Explorations 2025!!! This week long, half day summer camp for middle schoolers (ages 11-14) will be creating “Art Around the World” with Tracie Bradford. Ms. Tracie is ready with some fantastic creative experiences for students, including African Tribal Masks, Japanese Sumi-e Ink Painting, Mexican Talavera Tile Designs, and more! Every student will get all needed supplies, daily snacks, and a camp t-shirt.Art Explorations will run each day from July 14-18 at the Alabama Center for the Arts’ Visual Arts Building. The camp starts daily at 8am, and finishes each day at 12pm. Winner of three 2009 Tony Awards, including Best Musical Score and the 2010 Pulitzer Prize, Next to Normal was also chosen as “one of the year’s ten best shows” by critics around the country, including The Los Angeles Times, The Washington Post, Rolling Stone and The New York Times. Dad’s an architect Mom rushes to pack lunches and pour cereal their daughter and son are bright, wise-cracking teens, appearing to be a typical American family. And yet their lives are anything but normal because the mother has been battling bipolar disorder for 16 years. Next to Normal takes audiences into the minds and hearts of each character, presenting their family’s story with love, sympathy and heart.This deeply moving piece of theatre provides a wonderful opportunity for performers to explore dramatic material and showcase vocal talents with an energetic pop/rock score. Next to Normal is an emotional powerhouse that addresses such issues as grieving a loss, ethics in modern psychiatry, and suburban life and is ideal for community theatres, as well as colleges and regional theatre companies. “Warning” for content, age appropriateness, etc. – As part of its commitment to presenting thought-provoking and socially relevant theatre, this ACA production of Next to Normal contains mature content. We are pleased to offer art related professional development sessions for art educators again at ACA this summer! Workshop Title:  LEGO Printing Short description of the session: Lean to use LEGO bricks as a fun introduction into the world of printmaking. Attendees can play with the materials and create their own images or work from a set of predetermined designs. Instructed by ACA faculty:  Tara Segars, Calhoun Community College, Art Instructor Deadline to pre-register in Powerschool (REQUIRED):  July 15 ACA classroom:  #313 (Visual Arts bldg.) Free. No pre-requisites. An artist’s reception for The Art of Decatur Theatre: Big Blue World will be held on Saturday, July 26 from 4:00 – 5:30 pm. The exhibit and reception are both free and open to the public.The Art of Decatur Theatre: Big Blue World, featuring DreamWeavers Theatre and captivating puppets designed by Drew Sybert. Both Drew and DreamWeavers Theatre board members will be on-site to mingle with guests and answer questions about the exhibit.The Art of Decatur Theatre: Big Blue World showcases more than a dozen custom built puppets (including Nemo, Marlin, Dory and all of their friends) from a previous production in Decatur, as well as some of the crew’s favorite colorful, one-of-a-kind costumes created for the cast. DreamWeavers shares photography and set pieces from the show.

Calhoun Visual Arts is proud to announce CREATIVE CORNERS 2025! These 1-day summer camp experiences are open to ages 16-99. All are welcome! Bookbinding for Beginners with Tara Segars, Calhoun Art Instructor Learn the art of bookbinding! Coptic bound books have an open spine with linked stitches, which allow the pages to lay flat when open. In this workshop, students will learn the basic (& easy!) Coptic Stitch to create small sketchbooks with collaged covers. Students are encouraged to bring any scrapbooking or collaging materials that fit their personality. Along with the stitching, students will learn basic folded book structures. No experience is necessary. All materials will be provided (again you are encouraged to bring your own supplies to make things more personal though), including snacks. (Lunch is not provided.) All are welcome!Paper Sculpted Florals with Jax Vadney, Calhoun Art InstructorPaper sculpture is a three-dimensional art form created by manipulating paper through folding, cutting, and gluing to create structures, shapes, and designs. Pieces can be complex, intricate, and delicate, allowing an artist to create lightweight creations of expression. In this half-day camp, students will learn the art of paper sculpture, creating original floral pieces. Every student will leave with their own original floral creations in unique vases.
