The last known ship to bring enslaved Africans into America, the Clotilda rests in the waters of the Mobile River north of the city. Come along with us as we make our way to this historic site and explore this somber but pivotal saga in local history with national significance. This special tour to the wreck site will be guided by our partners from Africa Town Freedom Tours, a group comprised of descendants of Clotilda passengers, storytellers, and community leaders in Africatown dedicated to sharing this important story. It will provide information on the voyage of the Clotilda, its passengers and their lives, and the enduring legacy of that fateful voyage by telling their stories.

This series of four classes will help those without significant experience in art to learn basic techniques applicable to a variety of mediums. By finding creative uses for small found or repurposed everyday objects—textiles, pottery, paper, metal, cups, plates, bottles and more—unique color and design can be incorporated into an original artistic creations. Our instructor will guide students in the processes by which uses for items are identified and sketches of concepts are made with an emphasis on fundamentals of color, line, texture, and dimension. This program will be led by accomplished local artist Nancy Milford. This program made possible by a grant from the Alabama Council on the Arts.

All classes and coaching are currently offered free of charge, and all courses are open to the public, but registration is required.   This financial education class is called “Power Hour: Spending Planning 101.” An interactive one-hour course designed to encourage participants to take control of their money by examining their motivations, habits, and attitudes surrounding their personal finances. The purpose of the course is to assist participants in identifying and setting SMART personal financial goals, developing realistic spending plans, and choosing the tracking methods to best suit their family’s lifestyle. The course is fun, interactive, and informative. Participants should bring or have access to a bank statement or spending trends for at least 30 days as well as a list of income and recurring expenses.   Currently, the class is offered virtually. Participants will be supplied a link after registration.
