About the HikeJoin us for a special guided hike featuring the amazing fireflies that call the Garden home! These intriguing insects are most active as the sun is setting and it starts to get dark. Youâll learn about their life cycle and how you can create a habitat for them in your own backyard. This program includes a presentation on fireflies, a guided walk through the Garden, and an opportunity to catch fireflies. We recommend bringing a clean, dry plastic jar with a lid (such as a mayonnaise jar) for a special firefly catch and release. And be sure to bring a flashlight for when it gets dark! Learn how to take your produce and make it last year round with Canning 101! Class attendees will learn the step-by-step process of water-bath canning, tips/tricks, and recipes to take home. To learn the process hands-on, the class will work together to make dill pickles and sweet pickle relish. At the end of the class, each attendee will take a quart of dill pickles home to enjoy. Please bring a cutting board and chopping knife with you. All other canning materials and ingredients will be provided. She discovered her passion for public horticulture and teaching through her mom and her various employments at the SFA Mast Arboretum, âNacogdoches Naturallyâ Education Program, Missouri Botanical Garden, JC Raulston Arboretum, and Moore Farms Botanical Garden. At the Huntsville Botanical Garden, she serves as the Director of Learning and Public Engagement. This class will focus on interacting with nature through a personalized journaling experience using creative means chosen by the participants themselves! Some supplies will be included with the class, but participants are encouraged to bring any practical mediums (i.e. pastels, oils, specialized cameras, etc.) that they may want to use for their nature journal as well. The more customized you make your journal, the more likely you will be to use it and expand upon it after the class. Other than that youâll just need a little creativity, some curiosity about the natural world, and an open mind! She earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Middle Tennessee State University in 2019 and decided to return to school to pursue her passion for conservation, obtaining a Master of Science in Biology in 2023. While at university, she taught several biology courses and conducted research on an endangered plant endemic to the area around her alma mater. After graduating, she worked as a plant merchandiser for Metrolina Greenhouses for over a year and currently serves as a Horticulturist at Huntsville Botanical Garden, focusing on the gardenâs natural areas.
