The DSM-5-TR is designed to serve clinicians as a guide to identify the most prominent symptoms to be assessed when differentially diagnosing a mental health disorder. Clinical training and experience are needed to use the DSM-5-TR. The diagnostic criteria utilized in the DSM-5-TR identify symptoms, behaviors, cognitive functions, personality traits, physical signs, syndrome combinations and durations that require clinical expertise to differentiate from normal life variations and transient responses to stress. Reliable diagnoses are essential for guiding not only treatment recommendations but also psychopharmacology. This training presents information concerning the criteria used in the differential diagnosis of mental disorders recognized in the DSM-5-TR. The training is intended to teach participants how to effectively utilize the DSM-5-TR manual. You will become familiar with the mental health disorders contained in the DSM-5-TR and will be presented opportunities to differentially diagnose disorders utilizing practice vignettes. Workshop Objectives: Upon successful completion of this training, individuals will be able to: Effectively utilize the DSM-5-TR Describe the broad categories of mental disorders and the criteria for their differential diagnosis as specified in the DSM-5-TR Demonstrate capacity in differential diagnosis utilizing practice vignettes Workshop Materials: Participants are strongly encouraged to have a DSM-5 or DSM-5-TR (preferred) available for reference during this training. Presented by Daphne S. Cain, PhD, LCSW   **This training satisfies the ASBSWE licensure renewal requirements based on the amendments made to Chapter 850-X-8 Continuing Education, requiring an additional 3.0 clinical contact hours of training on the DSM-5-TR for clinical social workers.

Local author Jim Parker and illustrator Don Howard will be at Harrison Brothers on August 23 for a meet and greet! Jim Parker is an American singer-songwriter and co-founder of the Huntsville sub-chapter of the Nashville Songwriters Association International. He is also a poet, storyteller, guitarist, and performer. In 1985, he moved to northern Alabama to be closer to his wife's family while also growing a successful career in real estate. He never gave up on music, though, running songwriter workshops and drawing local creatives who wanted to learn the craft of songwriting. He also shared with others his knowledge of the music industry gained from more than 50 years in the music business. Presently, Parker is the creator and host of a popular songwriter series show at the Von Braun Center Playhouse in Huntsville, which has been running for over 20 years. He has devoted his life to sharing his passion for music and the stories behind the songs with audiences young and old. Don Howard embarked on his career as a caricature artist over 40 years ago. He worked for Disney for more than 15 years on projects such as Robin Hood and Winnie-the-Pooh. Shortly after, he moved to Huntsville, where he established Don Howard Studios. So come meet Jim and Don in person, hear their stories, and get your books signed!
