dis/comfort in the North features more than 50 artists from 16 countries. Selected through a call for submissions and by invitation, artists share encounters and intimacies with the North through video, photography, carving, embroidery, an interactive card game, a protest speech, and two-dimensional works printed on photo transparencies. A range of experiences and stories unfold, asking viewers to consider their own dis/comfort and reflect on the broader contexts of how comfort shapes living in and visiting the North. Curated by master’s student Katie Ione Craney, this exhibition is a project for the Arctic & Northern Studies program. Students gain deep regional knowledge and practical research experience through small classes and faculty mentorship. The UAF Art Department is proud to present “The Sick,” the thesis exhibition of works by Bachelor of Fine Arts student Kevin M. Carroll, on view November 3rd -7th and November 10th - 14th at the UAF Art Gallery. An opening reception will be held on the First Friday of the month, Nov. 7th from 5pm to 7pm. According to the Health Analytics and Vital Records Section of the Alaska Department of Health’s Division of Public Health, the number of drug-related overdoses in the state of Alaska increased by 45% from 2022 to 2023. Artist Kevin M. Carroll designed a survey to capture public perceptions of addiction through questions that ask respondents to describe addiction using adjectives and subjective reflection. Using this data, Carroll created a body of work consisting of 45 artworks, representative of the 45 percent increase. Carroll said “‘The Sick’ is my reflection on past traumas of growing up in an urban environment. I combine my own experiences with those of 45 survey respondents, reflecting on their experiences with addiction & substance abuse to answer questions about what addiction looks like to them in colors, shapes, images, and personal stories.” The body of work is titled “The Sick,” named for the illness that inflicts those who struggle with addiction. This exhibition features soft pastel and oil glazed layered paintings. The show's central themes of poverty, addiction, and trauma are expressed through vibrant color schemes & blending of natural forms often seen in graffiti art that are both beautiful & unnerving. All UAF Art events are free and open to the public.

Each meeting will have a guest speaker for 20-30 minutes ranging from different local employers to community support agencies that serve both employment candidates as well as businesses. There will be opportunities to announce local job openings and community employment events, as well as network and ask questions of employers, community support agencies and employment specialists. Job seekers are not a part of this group or these meetings. This group is open to hiring professionals, employment specialists and partner agencies. Known for his mentorship and editorial rigor, he continues to champion quality regional journalism. Diana Haecker, The Nome Nugget Diana Haecker is the owner, editor, and longtime reporter of The Nome Nugget, Alaska’s oldest weekly newspaper. Since 2003, she has covered the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race and contributed to Mushing Magazine, chronicling Alaska’s mushing and rural life with insight and care. Her reporting highlights the resilience, humor, and challenges of life in Western Alaska’s remote communities. Sage Smiley, KYUK Sage Smiley is the news director at KYUK in Bethel, Alaska, where she leads community-driven reporting across the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta. A lifelong audio storyteller, she began producing radio as a teenager and has since worked with Alaska Public Media, KDLG, and other regional outlets. Her journalism blends sound-rich narrative craft with a deep respect for place and people. Ollie Williams, Cabin Radio Ollie Williams is the cofounder and editor of Cabin Radio, a Yellowknife-based independent media outlet serving the Northwest Territories. A former BBC journalist, he helped shape Cabin Radio into one of Canada’s most trusted northern news sources, emphasizing transparency, accountability, and local storytelling. His work amplifies Arctic and Indigenous voices while training the next generation of northern journalists. Join us for a powerful talk by Dr. Petra Banks, one of our own faculty members in the UAF Department of Anthropology, as she shares her work identifying victims of The Great Terror (1936–1938) in Batumi, Georgia. Working with the Georgian Recovery, Documentation, and Identification Project (GRDIP), Dr. Banks has helped excavate and analyze Stalin-era mass graves containing victims of political repression. Her presentation will explore the challenges of international fieldwork, the scientific and ethical complexities of identifying commingled human remains, and the profound impact of returning individuals to their families after decades of uncertainty. This free, public event is part of the UAF Anthropology Colloquium Series. All are welcome to join and learn how archaeological and forensic research can help restore historical truth and human dignity. "Identifying Victims of The Great Terror (1936-1938) in Batumi, Georgia: excavation, analysis and repatriation of victims from a Stalin-era mass grave" with Petra Banks Date: Friday, November 7th Time: 3:00pm-5:00pm Location: Bunnell 302 & via Zoom Zoom Link: https://alaska.zoom.us/j/87981587893   Abstract The Great Terror or Great Purge (1936-1938) was an era in Soviet history where intellectuals, religious leaders, and dissidents of the soviet regime were “disappeared” and either sent to Gulags or executed. In The Republic of Georgia an estimated 30,000 went missing and 15,000 were killed. Recent excavations in Batumi revealed six mass graves encompassing approximately 200 individuals. Dr. Petra Banks, along with other Georgian Recovery, Documentation, and Identification Project (GRDIP) volunteers assisted Dr. Meri Gonashvili in the excavation of one of these graves in 2021 and returned to Tbilisi to help in the identification and resolution of commingling of the remains in 2022 and 2025. There are currently six individuals who have been identified, and at least three individuals have been repatriated to their families. This presentation will discuss the complexities of the excavation process in another country, the different strategies being employed in resolving the commingled remains, and the long-term goals for the identification and recovery of additional individuals.    About the Speaker Dr. Petra Banks is a forensic anthropologist and bioarchaeologist whose work focuses on skeletal trauma analysis and the excavation of human remains in both historical and modern contexts. Her research examines trauma patterns resulting from events such as falls, vehicle impacts, blasts, and aircraft crashes, with the goal of building a referential database to compare trauma across modern and unidentified cases. Dr. Banks has participated in excavations of historic cemeteries in Texas and a Stalin-era mass grave in the Republic of Georgia. As part of Operation Identification, she assisted in the recovery and identification of migrants who died crossing the U.S.–Mexico border.
