Since time immemorial, Native people have called Walnut Canyon home. During traditional times, a thriving community lived within the canyon, building cliff dwellings in natural geologic formations. Participants on this hike will descend into the canyon, have the opportunity to view the cliff dwellings, and learn about the Ancestral Puebloans' rich cultural history. This hike requires pre-registration, and has limited spaces available for participants. Please call (928) 526-3367 to register. The hike is a 1.5 miles round trip. The trail descends 180 feet into the canyon. Participants then walk on a narrow, uneven, and rocky surface to view the cliff dwellings. Participants are encouraged to wear sturdy shoes, wear sun protection, bring plenty of water, and dress in layers.

In response to rampant looting, and the destruction of Walnut Canyon's cliff dwellings, a United States Forest (USFS) ranger was assigned to Walnut Canyon to preserve the park's resources. Beginning in 1904, the assigned ranger lived in what is today known as Ranger Cabin, which is one of the oldest USFS cabins in the country. Join a ranger for a hike out to ranger cabin, learn about the park's rich and complicated history, view the cabin, and see the newly furnished interior. The hike is a 2 miles round trip. The trail is relatively flat, but is rocky and uneven. There is very limited shade on the trail to Ranger Cabin. Participants are encouraged to wear sturdy shoes, wear sun protection, bring plenty of water, and dress in layers.  Ranger Cabin is within the closed backcountry of Walnut Canyon National Monument, and is only accessible through a ranger guided tour. 

Interested participants should meet the ranger leading the hike at the Walnut Canyon Visitor Center.

The Poetry of Migration WorkshopDrawing inspiration from the migration of birds in Walnut Canyon National Monument this workshop offers participants an opportunity to learn about birding from national park ranger Ryan Carpenter then write about their observations in a poetry workshop led by poet Jodie Hollander. In addition to using inspiration from the beauty of the natural world around us we’ll also study examples of celebrated poems that effectively capture the wonder and awe of the world of birds. We’ll discuss techniques such as metaphor imagery repetition and sound as well as cover effective use of line breaks. No experience is necessary. Free and open to all. Hollander is the originator of 'Poetry in the Parks ' in conjunction with many National Parks and Monuments throughout the US.Ryan Carpenter has worked as an interpretive park ranger and education specialist with the National Park Service for 16 years. During his time with the NPS Ryan has led numerous nature walks many of which focus on bird observation. Ryan has also co-lead pelagic bird trips in Southeast Alaska and nocturnal bird trips in Tucson AZ.
