Read to a Dog gives kids the chance to read to a non-judgmental listener, one who will accept the story exactly as they read it. For many children, this allows them a rare chance to experience stress free reading. Being able to relax and have fun reading increases motivation to read, which is an essential element in becoming a successful reader. Come to Sahuarita Library and read to Grace. Grace is eagerly waiting to meet you and see the world through the books you choose. She is a very good listener. How does Read to a Dog work? Kids come to library during Read to a Dog and select a book to read to a furry friend. All of the dogs and handlers who participate have been certified as therapy dogs by an accredited organization. Read to a Dog is designed to allow young learners the chance to read to a non-judgmental listener, one who will accept the story exactly as it's read. For many children this allows them a rare chance to experience stress-free reading: they are able to relax and have fun while sharing a book. Come read to Danny, a two-year-old, 160-pound, smooth-coated Saint Bernard. Danny is a fan of people of all ages and sizes. And he is a good listener. How does Read to a Dog work? The objective of mindful living is to develop a non-judgmental present-moment awareness. Being present in the here-and-now is a learnable skill that enhances our physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Each week, a talk on an aspect of mindfulness will be shared, followed by a silent meditation practice; the session will end with questions and comments from participants. Led by community volunteers.

This is a monthly book club, with a lively discussion, for adults!  We meet in person on the second Tuesday (usually) of the month, from 2 to 3 p.m. Registration is not required. (For December, we will meet on the third Tuesday.) Here is the list of titles we will read in 2026 (selection and sequencing subject to availability and the whims of the club leader).   There is a monthly email newsletter with reminders and updates; if you would like to get signed up, and for any other questions, please call the Sahuarita Library at 520-594-5490.  The book for our February meeting is The Orchid Thief, by Susan Orlean. The library has very few copies, so people attending this meeting might need to obtain their own copy of the book (in whatever format you choose).
