The San Pedro River is also a critical migrationcorridor that provides water, food, and shelter for another 250 migratory andwintering birds. Novice and experienced bird watchers attend our bird walks toview the diverse avian community of the area. TheSan Pedro Riparian National Conservation Area (SPRNCA) provides habitat forover 100 species of breeding birds. The San Pedro River is also a criticalavian migration corridor that provides water, food, and shelter for another 250migratory and wintering birds. Novice and experienced bird watchers attend ourbird walks to view the diverse avian community of the SPRNCA. We usuallyobserve 30-60 species on these popular two-to-three-hour walks. Bring water, ahat, and binoculars. All are welcome, but the walks may not be suitable foryoung children.  These walks can bemoderately difficult on uneven terrain. No dogs, please. Takea walk to the ruins of the historic Grand Central Mill.  During the Tombstone silver boom, this stamp mill operated 24 hours a day, processing ore brought from Tombstone by wagons.  Learn about the mining history of the area during a three-mile round trip walk to the mill site. This walk follows an uneven dirt and gravel trail. Please realistically assess your ability to do this walk. There is limited shade, and it will be hot on sunny days. Wear a hat, sun protection, appropriate clothing, and sturdy shoes. Bring water and snacks. All walks are free, no reservations required. Participants must sign a liability waiver before the walk starts. This tour meets at the Fairbank Townsite, which is along Highway 82, 10.0 miles east of the Highway82/90 intersection in Whetstone. The entrance to the parking area is on the north side of the highway about 0.5 mile east of the San Pedro River bridge. The tour will meet near the Schoolhouse Museum. Along the way, you may catch glimpses of flutteringbutterflies, discover subtle signs of wildlife, and enjoy the steady chorus of birdsongoverhead. Each step reveals something new—from wildflowers swaying in the breezeto glimpses of animals or insects tucked into the undergrowth. Walks cover 1.5to 2 miles on easy terrain and are suitable for most adults and children. Thewalk is free; reservations are not required. Join docents from the Friends of the San Pedro River for a tour of the Murray Springs mammoth kill site. Discovered by Dr. C. Vance Haynes from the University of Arizona in 1966, Murray Springs contained not only fossils from mammoth killed by the prehistoric Clovis people, but also projectile points and a bone tool believed to be used to straighten spear shafts. This is an easy walk of less than a half mile, though it does include dirt steps into and outof a dry wash. Please realistically assess your ability to do this walk. The walk is free; reservations are not required. Participants must sign a liability waiver before the walk starts. From E. Highway 90/AZ-90 in Sierra Vista, drive north on Moson Rd. for 1.28 miles and turn east.  Meet the docent at the gate to the site. Tour the ghost town of Fairbank to learn about the history of the area and enjoy some time outdoors. Fairbank dates to 1882, when it grew up around a train depot – the closest to Tombstone. An optional walk to the cemetery concludes the tour – a one-mile walk on a trail which includes a short uphill section with poor footing and loose rock. You are welcome to participate in the tour and not go to the cemetery. The walk is free; reservations are not required. Participants must sign a liability waiver before the walk starts. The tour meets in front of the Schoolhouse at the Fairbank Townsite. The entrance to the parking area is on the north side of the highway about 0.5 mile east of the San Pedro River bridge. The Friends of the San Pedro River spring festival explores the cultural and natural history of the Upper San Pedro River Valley. It will feature great activities for adults and kids, a series of talks, andinformational displays. The event this year will emphasize cultural history -you will be able to throw an atlatl, make an adobe brick, learn about the Clovis mammoth hunters and other native cultures, hear the latest on the restoration of Camp Naco, find out about the Amerind Foundation, and more. We will delve into the natural history of the area as well, with speakers and displays on the plants and animals that live here. You will have the chance to interact with and ask experts your questions about nature and history. We will have art projects for you and your kids to participate in. This festival is timed to welcome the return of the birds as they migrate north from the tropics, and the day will start with a bird species count at locations aroundthe San Pedro Riparian National Conservation Area that birders of all levels are invited to join – stick around to learn the results of the team competition! Celebrate the San Pedro! is free and open to all.  It will be held inthe gardens around the San Pedro House, eight miles east of Sierra Vista onHighway 90 – you can search for it and get directions in Google maps. This fort was operational during the late 1770s, thecenterpiece for a planned Spanish occupation of the San Pedro River Valley thatfailed. This is a three-mile round trip walk over trails, uneven ground, androcky slopes. The return is gradually uphill. Please realistically assess your ability to do this walk.There is no shade, and it will be hot on sunny days.
