Southwest Subjects in Watercolor: a 3-part Series

Path to Emotional Healing Program: A 6-Week, Self-Paced ProgramRegister Here$105 Non-Member / $84 Member Thursdays, October 29, November 5, 12, 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Dip your toes into watercolor by exploring our beautiful Sonoran desert subjects, from sunsets to cacti. This three-part series will teach you a touch of desert-relevant color observation, as well as watercolor fundamentals. Please provide your own art supplies. Recommended art supplies: a tube of pthalo blue (or any tealy-blue, cyan color)a tube of quinacridone rose (or any rose, magenta-y color)a tube of azo yellow (or any lemony yellow color)watercolor paper (Instructor likes Bee brand, it is cheap and good quality, carried by Michael’s or Walmart. Canson is also good.)pencil and pen (I recommend a mechanical pencil, just for quick sketches of subject before painting)a kneaded eraser (optional)instructor Hannah WhiteHannah M. White, Tucson-born nerd and lover of technical tangents, started taking classes with TDS in middle school. Determined to make art her career, she earned a bachelor’s in illustration (UA) and a master’s in biomedical visualization (UIC)-which her TDS experience helped to shape. She returns remotely to share her love of art. When not teaching, she’s writing stories, sketching scientific posters, or designing imaginative characters and worlds. Fused Glass Mosaic Painting: Autumn Leaves

Path to Emotional Healing Program: A 6-Week, Self-Paced ProgramRegister Here$65 Non-Member / $52 Member Class Capacity 15 Paint the bright and vivid colors of autumn for a cheerful reminder of the coming cooler weather. Make them fanciful or bring pictures to follow. No experience necessary. All materials are provided by the artist. Tiles are ready to hang when painting is finished. Each tile is approximately 4” by 7”. Feel free to wear or bring an old shirt, smock, or apron. Instructor Dee TaubeI have always loved art, so while growing up I took all the art classes that were offered in school. I was drawn to art beyond being content to just appreciate it, but during my working career making time for art seemed a luxury to be put on hold for the future. Somehow I found jewelry making and fell in love with it. It enabled me to work with color, design, and texture, it was a great stress-reliever, an outlet for my creativity, and it nurtured my soul. When I became a member of an artists’ co-op in Colorado Springs, I was constantly admiring the work created by the glass artists there, and one day one of them offered to teach me how to fuse glass. I was hooked. Creating fused glass art has taught me to appreciate all art even more than I did before. It is always a learning experience. But when everything goes right, the end result brings me joy and nurtures my soul, as I always hope it will for those who see my art. Learning, enjoying and creating art is an ongoing journey. We will clean and process many kinds of seeds. We will learn about the importance of saving seeds in our communities for food sovereignty, genetic diversity and cultural reasons. Participants will take home seeds of each variety to plant in their own gardens. instructor Nicci RadheNicci Radhe is a Tucson-based photographer, horticulturist, and multidisciplinary artist whose work is deeply rooted in community, art, and the Sonoran Desert landscape. Nicci is also the founder of Horny Toad Horticulture, an organic small-scale urban seed farm located near Sentinel Peak in Tucson. Specializing in locally adapted heirloom and open-pollinated seeds. Through regenerative growing practices, workshops, plant sales, and partnerships with local organizations like Tucson Organic Gardeners, Nicci shares her passion for sustainable gardening and seed stewardship while encouraging a deeper connection to the desert environment. Path to Emotional Healing Program: A 6-Week, Self-Paced ProgramRegister HereFree with Gardens Admission-Registration Required Capacity is 60 Agaves have long been recognized for their importance in Mesoamerica, but their significance to Indigenous peoples north of the U.S.–Mexico border has only recently gained broader attention. Research shows that pre-Columbian farmers cultivated multiple domesticated agave varieties in Arizona as early as A.D. 600, with many surviving today as living remnants of ancient agricultural systems. These plants provide valuable insights into prehistoric farming, trade, and migration, while DNA and morphological studies suggest Arizona may have been a secondary center of agave domestication. Learn how this work highlights the importance of integrating botany, archaeology, and Indigenous knowledge to better understand the cultural and ecological history of these remarkable plants. instructor Wendy C. HodgsonI have lived in and loved the Sonoran Desert for more than 40 years. My areas of interest include Southwest U.S. and northern Mexico floristics, rare and endemic plants and taxonomy and systematics of Agave and Yucca, including the study of pre-Columbian agave cultivars. Other current projects include the study and documentation of the flora of the Grand Canyon region, including the evolution and distribution of certain plant groups as affected by the unique factors characteristic of this area. I am also studying and documenting Southwest US cacti, coordinator for the Cactus family treatment for Intermountain Flora and co-coordinator for the Cactus Family of Arizona project by Garden research staff and research associates. I am an avid plant collector who strives towards making high-quality specimens in difficult groups like Agavaceae and Cactaceae.
