Class Dates: 3/27, 4/16, 5/15, 6/26, 7/10, 8/21 List of Classes in this SeriesThe Evolution of Plants Friday, March 27, 10 am – 12 pm The evolution of plants is one of the most important stories of life on Earth. From single-celled algae in the sea to towering redwoods and the spectacular diversity of flowering plants, they have made all other life possible. This class traces the remarkable story of the evolution of plants. Mosses, Hornworts, and Liverworts Thursday, April 16, 10 am – 12 pm Mosses, hornworts, and liverworts are small plants that can be easily overlooked.  However, they represent a crucial stage in the evolution of land plants.  They also differ from other land plants in some key respects.  This class delves into these important plants. Ferns and Their Allies Friday, May 15, 10 am – 12 pm Ferns and their relatives were once the dominant land plants on Earth and they still form important components of ecosystems around the world.  In this class we explore the diversity and natural history of ferns, horsetails, and other plants known collectively as pteridophytes. Gymnosperms Friday, June 26, 10 am – 12 pm Gymnosperms include such familiar plants as pines, firs, spruces, gingkoes, and many others. They make up a large part of northern and mountain forests but also occur in more arid areas. This class looks at the diversity and natural history of these plants. Flowering Plants – Part 1 Friday, July 10, 10 am – 12 pm Flowering plants are the crown of plant evolution and are the dominant plants on Earth.  They are so diverse that they require 2 classes to just begin the conversation about them!  This class introduces flowering plants, also called angiosperms, discussing features that unite them and begin our survey of flowering plant families known as monocots. Flowering Plants – Part 2 Friday, August 21, 10 am – 12 pm We conclude our survey of plants by continuing our exploration of flowering plants.  We dive into some of the remaining families of flowering plants that are collectively called dicots.  Like the plants discussed in Flowering Plants Part 1, many of these plants will be familiar, while others you may never have heard of before. Instructor Sandy VillegasBorn in Puebla, Mexico, Sandy has always loved art making drawings and doodling when she got the chance. Her family moved to Sonora, Mexico and after a couple years she decided to come to the United States. She married a military man and while raising two children received an Associate Degree in Digital Arts. Some time passes before her daughter, Brittany, found an art project making paper flowers. Puebla is the only state of Mexico that has this unique art design form in all of Mexico. In this class, you will learn simple ways of creating Talavera designs on a paper mache crescent moon. You will trace Talavera designs and paint the designs with bright, multicolored acrylic paints. Each student goes home with a new piece of handmade art. We begin early with a guided walk around the renowned Cactus & Succulent Garden, learning secrets and stories along with Henry. Then, we’ll move into a propagating and caretaking workshop, where each participant will take home their own succulent after learning about the best tips and strategies for care. We’ll conclude by discussing the learnings that cacti and succulents have for humans, and how we can work together to support one another.  instructor Henry WilchHenry Wilch is a horticulturist, artist, naturalist and gardener at Tucson Botanical Gardens. A native Tucsonan, the desert’s resilience and diversity has always informed him and his work. This bracelet has a large focal bead of hand-made lamp-worked glass. The tiny flowers are delicately placed and beautifully colored, and a butterfly completes the bracelet. All materials and tools will be provided by the artist, and no experience is necessary. Each bracelet will be sized to fit the participant, and each participant will leave with a finished piece.   Instructor Dee TaubeI have always loved art, so while growing up I took all the art classes that were offered in school. I was drawn to art beyond being content to just appreciate it, but during my working career making time for art seemed a luxury to be put on hold for the future. Somehow I found jewelry making and fell in love with it. It enabled me to work with color, design, and texture, it was a great stress-reliever, an outlet for my creativity, and it nurtured my soul. When I became a member of an artists’ co-op in Colorado Springs, I was constantly admiring the work created by the glass artists there, and one day one of them offered to teach me how to fuse glass. I was hooked. Creating fused glass art has taught me to appreciate all art even more than I did before. It is always a learning experience. But when everything goes right, the end result brings me joy and nurtures my soul, as I always hope it will for those who see my art. Learning, enjoying and creating art is an ongoing journey.
