During the Night Ops Overnight you will tour key areas of the ship to see various spaces and systems and discuss the history, science, and engineering behind them. As you move around the ship, you can participate in several hands-on science stations and demonstrations interspersed with seeing sailors’ living spaces! The Museum’s Live-Aboard Overnight Program was one of the first of its kind and a model for overnight Museum adventures. Explore the decks of this famous World War II ship from the Captain’s Bridge to our Sickbay as you walk in the footsteps of astronauts and heroes aboard the ship that proudly recovered the first men to walk on the Moon, the Apollo 11 and 12 lunar mission astronauts. The Live-Aboard program includes an evening tour, breakfast and dinner in the original Enlisted Mess, late-night ghost stories, and more! The program is suitable for all age ranges and its standard single-night stays are divided into: Family/Small Group Live-Aboard: For individual families who wish to stay aboard.Youth Group Live-Aboard: For organized youth groups such as scouts and schools.Adult Group Live-Aboard: For organized adult clubs, work groups, or groups of friends.

Please join us starting at 1 pm to hear the amazing story of Captain Nicholas “Mongo” Mongillo’s dogfight over the skies of Iraq during the opening day of Operation Desert Storm while serving on the USS Saratoga (CV-60). Captain Mongillo was flying the F/A-18C that is now on display at the USS Hornet Museum during this dogfight. He will share his experiences in the aircraft and during his historic dogfight with the audience and answer any questions you have! Captain Mongillo’s Bio: CAPT Nicholas Mongillo was born in Bridgeport, Connecticut and grew up in Stratford, Connecticut. He was commissioned via Aviation Officer Candidate School in June of 1986. Mongillo served as a student pilot earning his “Wings of Gold” in Nov 1987. He then reported to the “Frogs” of Training Squadron 19 at NAS Meridian, Mississippi for assignment as a T-2C Buckeye Flight Instructor under the Selectively Retained Graduate (SERGRAD) program. In December 1989 he reported to the “Gladiators” of Strike Fighter Squadron 106, Jacksonville, Florida, for initial FA-18 Hornet training. He was then assigned to the “Sunliners” of Strike Fighter Squadron 81. While assigned there, he deployed twice with Carrier Air Wing 17 onboard the USS Saratoga (CV 60) and participated in Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. During Desert Storm, he downed an Iraqi MiG-21 during his first of 25 combat missions, earning a Silver Star Medal. In March 1993 he reported to the “Blackbirds” of Fighter Squadron 45 as an Adversary Instructor in Key West, Florida before reporting back to the “Gladiators” as a FA-18 instructor. During his Gladiator tour he earned the 1996 Flight Instructor of the Year Award. Following his instructor duty, he reported to the “Marauders” of Strike Fighter Squadron 82, and deployed with Carrier Air Wing 1 onboard USS George Washington (CVN 73) in support of Operation Southern Watch. During his Marauder tour, Mongillo earned the Commanding Officer’s Junior Officer Leadership Award. In August 2000, Mongillo reported to the Naval Strike and Air Warfare Center, Fallon, Nevada and served as the TOPGUN Executive Officer and a Tactics Instructor. In February 2004 he reported to the “Fighting Redcocks” of Strike Fighter Squadron 22, Lemoore, California, as the Executive Officer. In 2005, he assumed command of the “Fighting Redcocks” and deployed with Carrier Air Wing 14 onboard USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76) in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. During his commanding officer tour, Mongillo earned the 2006 Navy and Marine Association Commander Leadership Award. Mongillo was then assigned to United States Northern Command located in Colorado Springs, CO where he served as a Deputy Command Center Director. From June 2010 to July 2013, he served as the Installation Commander and Range Commander for the Pacific Missile Range Facility, Kauai, Hawaii. CAPT Mongillo has received the Silver Star Medal, the Legion of Merit, the Joint Meritorious Service Medal, three Meritorious Service Medals, four Strike Air Medals with Combat V, three Navy Commendation Medals two with Combat V, the Navy Achievement Medal, and various unit and campaign awards. He has accumulated over 5500 flight hours and nearly 700 arrested landings. He holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Western Connecticut State University. In 2000, he graduated with distinction from the Naval War College, earning a Masters of Arts Degree in National Security and Strategic Studies and was the recipient of the James D. Forrestal Award for excellence in Strategy and Force Planning. He retired from the US Navy on 01 Nov 2013, completing nearly 28 years of service.

Please join the USS Hornet as we commemorate those who have given their lives in the service of this country. We will have a wreath laying, special guest speakers and a flyover from the Memorial Squadron. Our 2 featured speakers: CDR Trisha J Kelly, Commanding Officer, NRC Alameda (Bio below) and CDR Michael “BC” Molloy, Commanding Officer, Navy Talent Acquisition Group, Golden Gate (Bio Below) NTAG Golden Gate is the Navy’s premiere recruiting district – covering central and northern California, including the SF Bay Area, Sacramento, Central Coast, and Central Valley. Headquartered in Mountain View, it consists of 10 divisions with 38 Navy Recruiting Stations, 3 Officer Recruiting Stations, and 2 Military Entrance Processing Stations. Its mission is to recruit top talent for the Navy’s success and sailor growth. She graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 2009 with a Bachelor of Science in Oceanography. CDR Kelly holds a Master of Arts in Education with a focus on Instructional Leadership from Point Loma Nazarene University and JPME Phase I from the Naval War College. CDR Kelly began her naval career onboard USS Bunker Hill (CG-52) out of San Diego, CA, where she served as the Ordnance and Gunnery Division Officer, and Assistant Chief Engineer. She deployed twice during her initial tour and earned her Surface Warfare Device (SWO). After completing Expeditionary Combat School in 2011 CDR Kelly’s next assignment was at Maritime Expeditionary Security Squadron (MSRON) Four in Little Creek Virginia as the Weapons Department Head. She completed a deployment with CTG 56.5 to Kuwait providing security escorts to High Value assets, responsible for the entire weapons and ammunition inventory in the U.A.E.   CDR Kelly was selected into the Meteorology Oceanography community (METOC) in 2011 and served as a Forecaster and Tsunami initial responder while at the Joint Typhoon Warning Center in Pearl Harbor HI. She went on to serve as the Flag Aide to the Oceanography and Navigator of the Navy (N2N6E), stationed at the Pentagon where she received her Information Warfare Device. Following a short period in the Reserves she served as an Officer Recruiter for the San Diego District and led 6 enlisted recruiting stations earning honors as the top Officer Recruiting station of the Southwest region. CDR Kelly was selected to the Training and Administration of the Reserves (TAR) – Surface Warfare Community in Fall of 2018. Her first TAR assignment was to MSRON Eleven out of Seal Beach CA as the Executive Officer where she earned her Small Craft Insignia. CDR Kelly was the Reserve Program Director of Military Sealift Command Pacific out of Point Loma CA before her selection to Commander. She just completed a tour as the Executive Officer and currently serves as the Commanding Officer of Navy Reserve Center Alameda. Her husband Sean Kelly is a Coast Guard veteran and they have 2 children Quinn and Hunter ages 5 and 6. Her personal decorations include FTS (TAR) Junior Officer of the Year CY20, Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (3) Navy and Marine Corp achievement medal (4), United States Coast Guard Commendation Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, and various unit and campaign awards.   Bio CDR Michael “BC” Molloy Commander Michael “BC” Molloy is a native of Missoula, MT.  He graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 2007 with a Bachelor of Science in Information Technology with a focus on National Security Affairs.  After commissioning, he coached the Naval Academy Sprint Football team and reported to Pensacola, FL for aviation training.  He earned his Naval Aviator wings in April 2009. After receiving initial MH-60S training with Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron TWO (HSC-2) at Naval Station Norfolk, VA, he reported to the ‘Chargers” of HSC-26 in Norfolk, VA.  Shortly after checking in, he deployed in support of Operation UNIFIED RESPONSE, supporting disaster relief efforts in response to the 2010 earthquake in Haiti.  Additionally, he deployed to FIFTH Fleet in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM in the summer of 2010 and spring 2012.    His duties included Detachment Operations Officer, Assistant Tactics Officer, Squadron NATOPS Officer and squadron NATOPS instructor. After transition to the HH-60H airframe, CDR Molloy joined the “Red Wolves” of HSC-84 in Norfolk, VA in 2013, one of two Navy Helicopter squadrons designated as direct support to Special Operations Forces.  While there, he served as Squadron NATOPS Officer and NATOPS Instructor, Assistant Operations Officer, Detachment Operations Officer, and Assistant Maintenance Officer. He deployed twice to the CENTCOM Area of Responsibility supporting Crisis Response and multiple Joint and Coalition exercises. In September 2015, CDR Molloy reported to Naval Special Warfare Sea, Air, Land (SEAL) Team FOUR at Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek, VA as Fires Support Officer, and Joint Terminal Attack Controller (JTAC).  While assigned to Team FOUR, he deployed in support of Special Operations Command Africa. Following refresher training in the MH-60S.  He joined the “Firehawks” of HSC-85 in 2018. He deployed in support of Special Operations Command Pacific in 2019-2020, participating in multiple Joint and Coalition exercises in the INDOPACOM theater. His duties at HSC-85 included Assistant Operations Officer, Detachment Maintenance Officer, and Squadron Maintenance Officer. In July 2021, CDR Molloy was assigned to Headquarters, United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) as a Joint Air Officer in the current operations division.  He most recently served as the Executive Assistant to the USSOCOM Director of Operations from October 2022 to July 2023. His personal decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal (2 awards), the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (3 Awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (2 awards), and various campaign/unit awards. CDR Molloy is married to Amanda Molloy of Grove City, PA and they have two children and a happy yellow lab.
