Atherton Library will welcome literature-inspired floral arrangements this May with the very first Bouquets to Books show by the Atherton Garden Guild. The show will be open to the public from Tuesday, May 6, through Friday, May 9, during library hours. Founded in 1966, the Atherton Garden Guild meets nine times a year to educate members in all matters related to home gardening, civic beauty, and local history. The Guild donates to local nonprofits that share its values and educational mission. In addition to maintaining the rose garden at Holbrook Palmer Park, the Guild hosts quarterly floral arranging demonstrations at the Atherton Library.

Join us as we decorate a miniature landscape inside a small metal tin! We might not always have access to the places that help keep us calm, so let’s make our own pocket-sized version that we can tote around and peek into whenever we need to take a break. Together, we’ll create mini books and other decor and have fun creating the little library, garden, coffeehouse, or any other calming space of our dreams. Registration is not required to attend, but we do ask that you RSVP ahead of time, as it will affect the amount of supplies we provide. Drop-ins are still welcome, though capacity limits may apply. This program is intended for children and teens, but all are welcome.

Make your first basket! This class offers a creative experience where you will make a basket. The class is for beginners who will learn how to weave reeds onto a wood basket frame. The finished size of the basket is 4.5 inches tall and 4 inches wide, a perfect size to hold pencils and pens. Participants will receive in-person, hands-on instruction and all materials will be provided. Hand strength is required for basket-making. Space is limited and registration is required. Registration opens on Sunday, April 13 at 8:00 AM.

Chen-style Taijiquan (Tai Chi) is widely acknowledged as the ancestor of all other styles of Taijiquan. This class will introduce the Chen-style Taijiquan form, Silk-reeling Exercises and Wuji Qigong. The Chen-style Taijiquan form is soft and graceful with strong rooted stands that will help students to develop strength, balance, coordination and an understanding of basic Taiji principles. Silk-reeling Exercises are a series of spiral movements which promote muscle relaxation and flexibility by reducing physical tension and strain. Wuji Qigong (standing meditation) will help students to cultivate internal energy (qi) with proper body alignment for better internal energy flow, which will enhance their immune systems and reduce physical and mental stress. Registration is encouraged but not required.

During this fun and satisfying hour-long event, you will participate in activities that enhance learning skills, brain plasticity, and promote short-term memory all while connecting with others!
