Make your first basket! This class offers a creative experience where you will make a basket. The class is for beginners who will learn how to weave reeds onto a wood basket frame. The finished size of the basket is 4.5 inches tall and 4 inches wide, a perfect size to hold pencils and pens. Participants will receive in-person, hands-on instruction and all materials will be provided. Hand strength is required for basket-making. Space is limited and registration is required. Registration opens on Sunday, April 13 at 8:00 AM.

Chen-style Taijiquan (Tai Chi) is widely acknowledged as the ancestor of all other styles of Taijiquan. This class will introduce the Chen-style Taijiquan form, Silk-reeling Exercises and Wuji Qigong. The Chen-style Taijiquan form is soft and graceful with strong rooted stands that will help students to develop strength, balance, coordination and an understanding of basic Taiji principles. Silk-reeling Exercises are a series of spiral movements which promote muscle relaxation and flexibility by reducing physical tension and strain. Wuji Qigong (standing meditation) will help students to cultivate internal energy (qi) with proper body alignment for better internal energy flow, which will enhance their immune systems and reduce physical and mental stress. Registration is encouraged but not required.

Engage in mindfulness meditation exercises and movement practices that you can incorporate into your daily routine. Mindfulness and meditation are practices that involve focusing your attention on the present moment, cultivating awareness, and promoting a sense of calm and clarity. Everyone will gain new skills and tools in helping to dissolve stress and long-held anxieties. Participants will build personal inner tools of reflective inquiry, curiosity, self-compassion, and self-trust. Each session will include time for questions and answers. Due to high demand, we ask that community members sign up for a single occurrence of this series so that as many community members can participate in this experience as possible.  Registration opens on April 17 at 8:00 AM, and registration is required to attend.

Join the Atherton Library as we welcome Samantha Chang for a Nature Journaling class. Whether this is your first time opening up a sketchbook or you are a long-time field sketcher who wants a community to go out with, “Sketching with Sami” will cover all topics that relate to field sketching and nature journaling. As a science illustrator, Sami can help guide you on how to sketch accurately and precisely. Through this class, you will learn the different ways to record your observations, use different mediums (ex. Graphite, pens, watercolor, etc.), and play around with various layouts of your pages. Together, we will explore different themes and subjects to sketch that may include seasonal blooms, animals in motion, or produce from the farmer’s market. We will also use the resources the library has to offer if they have reference books, outside spaces with gardens, or are near parks. This will be an easy-going class intended for folks to unwind and be mindful of the spaces we occupy. Registration is required, and we will send registrants a map with the meetup location at Holbrook-Palmer Park.
