Chen-style Taijiquan (Tai Chi) is widely acknowledged as the ancestor of all other styles of Taijiquan. This class will introduce the Chen-style Taijiquan form, Silk-reeling Exercises and Wuji Qigong. The Chen-style Taijiquan form is soft and graceful with strong rooted stands that will help students to develop strength, balance, coordination and an understanding of basic Taiji principles. Silk-reeling Exercises are a series of spiral movements that promote muscle relaxation and flexibility by reducing physical tension and strain. Wuji Qigong (standing meditation) will help students cultivate internal energy (qi) with proper body alignment for better internal energy flow, enhancing their immune systems and reducing physical and mental stress.

In-Person English Conversation Club

Improve your English and make new friends! Practice your speaking skills with fluent speakers and other English language learners in a small group. Open to all skill levels. For adults ages 18 and over. Capacity limits may apply.

Join us for a fun three-month book club designed especially for tweens ages 9-12 who enjoy reading and discussing the story! In our first session, participants will get to know one another, learn how the club will work, and dive into a discussion of City Spies by James Ponti - an action-packed adventure about a group of young spies working together to solve a global mystery. Copies of the book are available for pickup at the front desk.  In the following months, we’ll continue exploring books chosen by the group while talking about favorite characters, exciting storylines, and different perspectives. Each meeting features a lively discussion and may include a fun activity connected to the book. Do you have an enthusiastic or perhaps, alternatively, a reluctant reader? Then consider signing your child up for the fun experience of reading to a therapy dog at the library! Studies show that children who may feel reluctant to read in front of their peers, are much less anxious with an animal present as kids don't perceive animals, as judgmental. And through reading to dogs, children become much more comfortable & confident readers. And at our program in Belmont...even those, who are not yet reading themselves, can still participate, since families are welcome to sit down to share in a book, together. We also have on tap, a seasonal crafting activity for all ages & generations to take part in! It provides a creative & seamless way to be able to connect a bit more with others, who are attending, too. So register early for your personal 10-minute slot at smcl.org/pawsfortales as that helps us best plan for the appropriate number of dog teams, to have on hand. But if registration becomes full, still feel free to stop by on Tuesday, March 24th, as we'll fit you in, if anyone cancels. Plus, you can still enjoy observing this heartwarming program in action, while crafting together, regardless! This exciting series offers engaging 90-minute classes, each designed to build essential landscape drawing skills. By the end of the course, students will have developed a strong foundation in landscape drawing techniques. This is a four-week series.  Lesson 1: Friday, March 6, 2026, at 10:30 AM Contouring Landscapes: Students will explore aerial perspectives, drawing the contours of hills, valleys, and trees--like those found in the Delta Valley. Using pen for the initial contours, students can choose to add color to bring their landscapes to life. Inspired by the works of Wayne Thiebaud, this session is the perfect introduction to capturing natural forms. Lesson 2: Friday, March 13, 2026, at 10:30 AM Landscape Mark Making: Drawing on the techniques of Vincent Van Gogh, this class focuses on the art of mark-making. Students will practice using different types of marks to represent various trees and other natural features. They will then apply these skills to create a landscape drawing from a photo.  Lesson 3: Friday, March 20, 2026, at 10:30 AM Aerial Perspective and Shading: Students will learn the fundamentals of shading to create a sense of depth in their landscapes. By mastering aerial perspective, they will add dimension to their drawings, making distant elements appear further away while enhancing the overall composition. Lesson 4: Friday, March 27, 2026, at 10:30 AM Plein Air Sketching: In this final class, students will take their skills outdoors for plein air sketching. Using the techniques learned throughout the series, they will observe and draw from nature, applying their new skills in a real-world setting.
