Open to all adults who love to read and discuss non-fictional literature. In December, the Cupertino Library Adult Nonfiction Book Group will talk about The fear of too much justice: race, poverty, and the persistence of inequality in the criminal courts.by Stephen B. Bright and James Kwak (2023) Authors Stephen B. Bright and James Kwak’s book delves into the problem of how our actual criminal justice system generally fails to live up to the values of “liberty and justice for all.” In fact America’s criminal justice system is weighted against defendants of color and anyone too poor to hire competent lawyers. Between receiving incompetent legal defense through assigned public defenders, overly powerful prosecutors and threats of excessive jail time to force defendants into a plea bargain, and judges seeking re-election through their willingness to imposed the death penalty and crippling court fees that keep people who cannot pay them in jail, finding justice is a huge problem. Bright and Kwak propose that the courts could improve the odds of equal justice being served  by   the elimination of unjust fees and for profit incarceration, and significantly curbing the power of prosecutors. The Adult Nonfiction Book Discussion Group meets on the second Sunday of each month at 11am in Room 201B. December 16, 2025 marks the 250th anniversary of Jane Austen’s birth. Alive during the Regency Era, correspondence was sealed with letterlocking. Letterlocking is the historical practice of folding and sealing a letter to create its own envelope. Envelopes were not yet in use due to the high cost of paper and postage. In honor of Jane Austen's 250th birthday this month the Cupertino Library Adult Book Discussion Group will read and talk about her novel Persuasion.(1818.)  In her youth, Miss Anne Elliot, was in love with, but was persuaded to decline the marriage proposal of Captain Wentworth who at the time had "nothing to recommend him but himself." A decision she now regrets. When Anne and Captain Wentworth meet again some years later, the Elliots' fortune has been squandered by her father's extravagance, while Captain Wentworth's career in the Navy has brought him increased standing and respectability. Anne's love is unchanged, but she fears Captain Wentworth's feelings have. The Adult Book Discussion Group meets on the third Wednesday of each month at 11am, and on the third Thursday evening at 7pm in  room 201B. Adults of all ages are welcome. This storytime series is suitable for all ages and will feature stories, songs, rhymes and dances, all to encourage the development of crucial early literacy skills. Parents and children will listen together, learn together, and sing together. Storytime is limited to the first 100 families, with a maximum of 2 adults per family group.
