El Sobrante's very own local culinary historian Robert Brower will trace the history of the recipe for The Sauce or Sunday Sauce and explore the origin of Sunday Gravy. Along the way, we will learn a few "secret" kitchen tricks. Mr. Brower was born and raised in the Italian American neighborhood around Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church in Asbury Park, N.J. just down the street from Danny DeVito and his family. He learned to cook from his Nonna Rose and his great aunts, Vi and Kate. (To enhance your experience with this presentation, Mr. Brower recommends watching Neflix’s film “Nonnas”. Based on a true story, the movie is about a man who uses his inheritance to build an Italian restaurant in honor of his mother and her cooking. As the cooks for the restaurant, he enlists the help of four Nonnas. A subplot involves whether any of the four Nonnas can make a sauce that tastes like his memory of the sauce cooked by his mom.) Back by popular demand! Learn to paint seasonal flowers, fruits, and small animals with local artist Pauline Tsui. Pauline  studied Chinese brush painting under Master Cheung Shiu Shek – a lead artist of the Lingnan School and specialist in painting Peonies. In 2003 Pauline joined the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco as a volunteer and there she rekindled her interest in Asian art and painting. From 2008 Pauline started accepting invitations to host workshops and art demonstrations of Chinese Brush Painting and Calligraphy throughout California at venues such as art museums, public libraries, art and cultural centers, senior centers, community learning centers, and private corporations. This workshop is for adults only. Registration required. Please arrive to class on time; your spot will be given to someone on the waiting list if you arrive late ten minutes or more. Are you looking for a thrilling activity that allows you to connect with others while honing your strategic thinking and leadership skills? Come play chess every 2nd Saturday at 11-12 p.m. at El Sobrante Library, starting November. This event is for ages 10-100 but beginning chess skills are required as this is not an instructional class. Instructor TC Ball from West Coast Chess Alliance will referee each session.
