For 100 years the Redwood Highway has connected tourists and travelers to remote destinations in Northern California. Explore the intriguing history behind the campaign to lure visitors from around the world by way of the famous Redwood Highway! Mendocino County Museum has drawn from special collections donated by the community and the Redwood Empire Association archives to recount the story and development of the highway and spotlight the unique destinations in Mendocino County that played an important role in the marketability of the region. Visitors can see an expanded section dedicated to the history of Frontier Days and its early ties to the Redwood Highway, pose for a selfie in a barber chair in reference to the Whiskerino shaving contest, explore a curio shoppe highlighting pop-up businesses from Hopland to Piercey with hundreds of unique postcards & ephemera, even "drive" the highway with replica vintage car models! This exhibition opens May 15, 2026 with a reception from 5-7 P.M. Admission is by donation. There’s no better way to honor Mendocino Land Trust’s 50 years of conservation than with a free guided walk on the old haul road along the Big River watershed. Explore a thriving biodiversity hotspot where redwoods meet the salt marsh. Bring your binoculars to spot herons, otters, and seals, plus learn about the flora and fauna along the way. This tour will be led by Mendocino Land Trust Stewardship Project Coordinator, Chase Aherns and will take about 1.5 hours. A Kelley House Museum docent will share photos from the site’s history as a 19th-century lumber mill.   Since their founding in 1976, the Mendocino Land Trust has fought to protect this landscape, culminating in the historic 2002 acquisition of 7,300 acres from the Hawthorne Timber Company. This walking tour is part of the exhibit commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Mendocino Land Trust, on display during April and May. Expand your collection by learning to duplicate the rhododendrons in your yard and choosing the right hybrids and species for your area. Discover what to plant for colorful blooms 12 months out of the year! The workshop will wrap up with a tour of the Rhododendron Collection at Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens.
