Need community service hours for school? The next volunteer session at the Gilroy Library will be from September through November. Teens can sign up for a weekly 2-hour shift which they must attend for the whole 3-month session. This first week of sign-ups (August 18 - 24) is reserved for those entering their senior year (12th grade) of high school this fall. Sign-ups will open up to all other grades (ages 14 to 18) starting on August 25th. (Seniors can still sign up in the second week if they miss out on the first week.) To sign up: Pick up a blank application from the Gilroy Library Information Desk, or print one and fill it out. Bring your completed application to the Gilroy Library upstairs Information Desk during the sign-up period. No early applications accepted. At that time, you may select an available weekly shift. Important Information: This sign-up session is just for those currently in their senior year of high school. Sign-ups will open up to all other grades (ages 14 to 18) starting on Monday, August 25th. You must be between the ages of 14 and 18 to volunteer with the Library, regardless of grade level. You must live in Gilroy or San Martin, and/or be a student with Gilroy Unified School District. No repeat sessions unless invited back by staff. You must attend an orientation, Saturday, August 30th at 2PM. The Reading Program, Santa Clara County Library District’s adult literacy program, is seeking volunteer tutors to work one-on-one with adults looking to improve their reading, writing, and communication skills.  Important Notes: Volunteers that have completed the required Tutor Orientation are welcome to register for one of our Tutor Training sessions.  Once you submit your event registration, you will receive a link in the confirmation email to complete your Reading Program Tutor Intake Form. You must submit both the event registration and the Tutor Intake Form in order to attend the Training. In the case you have not yet attended an Orientation: Please review the tutor requirements on our website and if interested register for one of our upcoming Tutor Orientations on our website. Note: This event has been rescheduled to Sunday, September 14 at 3pm Join us for a lively discussion of Barons: Money, Power, and the Corruption of America's Food Industry by author Austin Frerick. Barons is the story of seven corporate titans, their rise to power, and the consequences for everyone else. It paints a stark portrait of the consequences of corporate consolidation, but it also shows we can choose a different path. A fair, healthy, and prosperous food industry is possible - if we take back power from the barons who have robbed us of it. This discussion will be led by local sustainable food advocate Peter Ruddock. All are welcome. No registration needed.

Santa Clara County Library District residents are eligible to register for this in-person ESL class led by a professional ESL instructor. This class session is for beginners. Join us to learn and improve your English listening and speaking skills. Space is limited so registration is recommended.  Classes are Monday and Wednesday evenings 6:30pm - 8:30pm from August 25 through November 19. There will be no class on September 1 or October 13. You should plan to attend the entire class session. This class will take place in-person at the Gilroy Library and is for adults. -------------------------- Los residentes del Distrito de Bibliotecas del Condado de Santa Clara pueden inscribirse en esta clase presencial de inglés como segundo idioma (ESL) impartida por un instructor profesional. Esta clase es para principiantes. Únase a nosotros para aprender y mejorar sus habilidades de comprensión auditiva y expresión oral en inglés. El cupo es limitado, por lo que se recomienda inscribirse. Las clases se imparten los lunes y miércoles por la tarde, de 6:30 pm a 8:30 pm, del 25 de agosto al 19 de noviembre.
