Wrath of Grapes: Pesticides in the Fields | Iras de las Uvas: Plaguicidas en los Campos

Learn about the history of pesticides in the United States' agriculture system and the impacts pesticides have had on farmworkers and their communities.After Dr. Marion Moses identified geographic cancer clusters in McFarland and Earlimart tied to pesticide use in the fields, the United Farm Workers (UFW) organized a grape boycott in protest of pesticide use in the fields dubbed “Wrath of Grapes.” This campaign aimed to end the use of 5 pesticides in the grape fields to preserve the natural resources of the surrounding communities and protect the public health of farmworkers and consumers. This campaign's goal was to achieve a paradigm shift in pest management strategies in the industrial agriculture industry that prioritized public health, farmworker protections, and preservation of natural resources. Participants will learn about the results of the UFW's activism against pesticide use in the fields, and the legacy of this activism in current pesticide regulations.This program is best suited for adults due to the complexity of the subject matter, but attendance is open to all ages.This program will be in the theater room of the Visitor Center at the César E. Chávez National Monument.Ven a aprender sobre la historia de los pesticidas en el sistema agrícola de Estados Unidos y los impactos que estos han tenido en los trabajadores agrícolas y sus comunidades. Después de que la Dra. Marion Moses identificara grupos geográficos de cáncer en McFarland y Earlimart vinculados al uso de pesticidas en los campos, la UFW organizó un tercer boicot a las uvas en protesta por el uso de pesticidas en los campos, llamado “La Ira de las Uvas”. Esta campaña buscaba terminar con el uso de 5 pesticidas en los viñedos para preservar los recursos naturales de las comunidades cercanas y proteger la salud pública de los trabajadores agrícolas y los consumidores. La campaña tenía como objetivo lograr un cambio de paradigma en las estrategias de manejo de plagas en la agricultura industrial, priorizando la salud pública, la protección de los trabajadores agrícolas y la preservación de los recursos naturales. Los participantes conocerán los resultados del activismo de la UFW contra el use de pesticidas en los campos y el legado de este activismo en la normativa actual sobre pesticidas. Este programa es más adecuado para adultos debido a la complejidad del tema, per la asistencia está abierta a todas las edades. Este programa se presentará en inglés.Este programa se llevará a cabo en el auditorio del Centro de Visitantes del Monumento Nacional de César E. Chávez.
