St. Patrick’s Day is March 17 and kids are invited to celebrate at Moraga Library by helping our Leprechaun find his missing items in the children’s section. When the checklist is completed, children can bring it to the front desk to claim a prize.

Join us for Part 1 of The Moraga Library Great Pumpkin Challenge! On April 3rd, Gardening expert Lori Caldwell will help us plant our very own pumpkins to take home. We'll also learn all about seeds and how to care of our seedlings so that they grow into pumpkins. In the Fall, we'll meet back at the library for a weighing contest to see whose pumpkin is the biggest. We'll also get to decorate our pumpkins in time for Halloween! Lori Caldwell is an Alameda County Master Composter, Bay-Friendly Certified Landscape Professional, self-taught edible gardener, and residential sheet mulch maven. She received a technical certification from the Maine Compost School. Making jam is one of her favorite pastimes. Her mission: “To connect people to the soil and all that it provides.” She has been happily teaching sustainable gardening classes and transforming yards in the San Francisco Bay Area since 2007.

Join us for a workshop on beginnings hosted by St. Mary's MFA candidate Lucas Maas! This generative workshop will be focused on beginnings. Both literally and figuratively. In the literal sense, how do we begin our essay, short story, or poem? How much potency does the first sentence hold? How does that affect the rest of the piece? And also, in the figurative sense, prompts like tell of a time you had to begin something that you never experienced before. Write about a threshold moment. Experiment with three possible first lines to your essay, story, or poem. With this theme, this workshop aims to help:  -Recognize the role of beginnings in both writing and life, distinguishing between literal openings (first lines, first images) and figurative openings (threshold moments, transitions).  -Experiment with generative writing techniques by drafting multiple first lines and short scenes to explore how different openings shape tone and direction.  -Reflect on personal experiences of “beginning” and translate them into creative expression, connecting lived thresholds to narrative or poetic form. -Evaluate and discuss peer work with care and respect to identify what makes an opening compelling and how beginnings invite readers into a piece. This workshop will also challenge participants to shed the notion that beginning something is a daunting task, and instead, can be a loose, and sometimes playful launchpad into their projects.

Help the Moraga Library reach our goal of diverting 3,000 lbs of textiles from landfills!  Did you know that over 14.5 million tons of textiles enter U.S. landfills or are incinerated each year? Or that the fashion industry is responsible for 20% of global wastewater? But you can help! Bring us your old clothes and textiles and we will help ensure they get REUSED or RECYCLED. ACCEPTED TEXTILES (Both reusable and/or damaged) • Pants, jeans, skirts, dresses, suits, shorts, shirts • Coats, jackets, gloves, hats, scarves • Shoes, boots, heels, sneakers, sandals, socks • Bras, underwear, slips, camisoles, tights • Handbags, belts, ties, headbands • Towels, sheets, tablecloths • Wallets, totes, backpacks, stuffed animals • Bedding, comforters, blankets NOT ACCEPTED: • Textiles that are wet, moldy, contaminated with chemicalsor bio-hazardous waste • Mattresses or mattress toppers • Furniture • Oversized Items • Carpeting or rugs • Pillows or foam cushions Items will only be accepted April 11 - 17 during open library hours.
