Morro Coast Audubon Society Presents   Field Trip:                 Atascadero Lake Birding   Date:                          Saturday, August 23, 2025   Time:                          8:00am to 10:30am   Leader(s):                 Claudia Freitas & Freddy Howell   Description: Join MCAS leaders for a guided bird walk around Atascadero Lake. This easy, one-mile walk will be taken at a slow to moderate pace, depending on bird activity and sightings along the way. The route follows gentle terrain over flat surfaces, making it accessible for most participants. Expect to encounter a variety of species across different habitats, with likely sightings including Red-shouldered Hawks, California Quail, California Scrub-Jays, woodpeckers, and various waterfowl.  This field trip is NOT ADA accessible, bathrooms are available, and the trip is open to all levels of experience. Registration: Registration will open on the morning of August 13, 2025 with notification sent to MCAS members and those on the MCAS ALERT EMAIL LIST. Morro Coast Audubon Society Presents   Field Trip:                 Habitat: White Point Fog Lichens   Date:                          Saturday, August 23, 2025   Time:                          09:00am to 11:30am   Leader(s):                 Michael Mulroy   Description: Join lichen enthusiast Michael Mulroy for a fascinating exploration of the unique maritime lichens at Morro Bay’s White Point. During the walk, you’ll learn about the charismatic fog lichens, their important ecological roles in coastal habitats, and how to identify several common—and perhaps one or two locally rare—lichen species. The walk involves a short but steep and uneven ascent to the top of White Point Vista, the overlook near the Natural History Museum. This may be challenging for some, so please consider this when registering.  This field trip is NOT ADA accessible, bathrooms are available, and the trip is open to all levels of experience. Morro Coast Audubon Society Presents   Field Trip:                 Shorebird Habitats  Date:                          Friday, August 29, 2025   Time:                          9:00am to 11:30am   Leader(s):                 Karen Watts & Robbie Revel   Description: Morro Bay, located along the Pacific Flyway, is a vital stopover for thousands of migrating birds—especially during peak migration. The beaches may look quiet, but they are teeming with life just beneath the surface. Ever wonder what birds are poking for in the sand or digging through rotting seaweed? Join us as we explore the sandy beach and wrack line ecosystems to discover what’s attracting so many shorebirds. Learn how detritus, algae, bacteria, and piles of rotting seaweed (wrack) support a thriving community of invertebrates—providing a feast for migrating birds. We'll walk 1–2 miles along a combination of hard-packed and soft sand.  This field trip is NOT ADA accessible, bathrooms are available, and the trip is open to all levels of experience.
