Dr. Lisa Damour is the author of several books, including The Emotional Lives of Teenagers: Raising Connected, Capable, and Compassionate Adolescents. Join us for a virtual event where Dr. Damour will discuss her books and how to help teens, caregivers, educators, and community leaders. The event will be available to view via Zoom, by clicking on this link: Virtual Author Event with Dr. Lisa Damour, and will also be live-streamed at the Mitchell Park Library, with light refreshments. This event will not be recorded, so we hope you can join us live online or at Mitchell Park!   We are very grateful to the Council for supporting teen mental health services and for the Community Services Department for collaborating with the library. Copies of The Emotional Lives of Teenagers will be given out at various locations around town. Dr. Lisa Damour is the author of three New York Times best sellers: Untangled, Under Pressure, and The Emotional Lives of Teenagers. She co-hosts the Ask Lisa podcast, works in collaboration with UNICEF, and is recognized as a thought leader by the American Psychological Association. Dr. Damour is a regular contributor to The New York Times and CBS News and the creator of Untangling 10to20, a digital library of premium content to support teens and those who care for them.

Each session is 45 minutes of sitting and/or walking meditation followed by 15 minutes of group sharing and Q&A. It is open to all levels of experience and no registration is required. Participants are encouraged to bring their own yoga mats and/or meditation cushions. Chairs are available for those who do not bring them. Join us to learn the basics of engineering and Python programming; no prior knowledge needed! In 8-weeks, we'll cover Python fundamentals, hands-on projects, and grow our technical skills and enthusiasm for future STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) learning opportunities. This program is intended for 3-5th grade students. This program meets weekly on Sundays starting at 11:00 AM from September 14th through November 2nd. Registration is required for the full 8-week series, as each session builds upon the last.*  Due to limited library laptop availability, bringing your own device with Wi-Fi connection capabilities for coding is highly encouraged! If you cannot bring a laptop, please check out a Chromebook at the library's front desk ahead of time for each class. *Registration will open on August 14th at 9:00 AM.

Join Sandy and Kent for a family-friendly line dancing class! Exercise your brain and body and enhance your balance while dancing to a variety of international music. No partner needed and beginners welcome! You are welcome to practice before and after by checking out their special playlist for this class. This class will take place in the Mitchell Park Bowl. (In the event of rain, the class will move to the Midtown Room inside the Mitchell Park Library.) Sandy and Kent have taught line dancing throughout the Bay Area for ten years. Join the Space Cookies robotics team for a hands-on STEM workshop for students in grades 3–5. In this one-hour session, participants will learn the basics of block-based coding using mBots, small programmable robots. After a brief introduction to the robots and an overview of coding concepts, students will work in teams to program their mBot to navigate a maze. No prior coding experience is required!  Parents are asked to provide a laptop or tablet for their children, or to borrow a library Chromebook ahead of time for each class. Perfect for families and audiences of all ages—come learn, move, and celebrate! Rachel-Anne Palacios is an Afro-Chicana Oakland native, multi-cultural arts educator, and self-taught folk artist. She has been teaching art workshops and classes at Bay Area schools and libraries for over a decade and a half and her lessons and projects are inspired by indigenous cultures and traditional art from around the world. Laya Arts Collective, founded by award-winning artist Priya Narayana, is dedicated to sharing Indian classical dance and culture with diverse communities. Through performances, residencies, and educational programs, Laya Arts Collective inspires audiences with storytelling, rhythm, and movement that connect tradition to the present day.
