Computer docents are volunteers who answer simple technical questions and offer basic instruction on library computers. They help you get started, so you can take those skills and continue to explore and learn on your own! Computer Docents can: Teach you to use email Teach you to create and save documents Teach you to print out a document or web page Teach you to do basic web searches Assist you with eBooks on the Libby app Computer Docents cannot: Perform repair work on your device Install hardware, software or program updates on your device Provide word processing services (typing on your behalf, etc.) Provide private lessons, or accept payment or remuneration of any kind Recommend products for you to buy (e.g., computers), do your online shopping, or place ads for you (e.g., eBay, Craig’s List, Amazon consignment sales, want ads, etc.) No appointments necessary. Computer Docent help is first come, first serve. If other patrons are waiting, Computer Docents can assist you for a maximum of thirty minutes. If you have any questions, please call the library at (925) 349-0883.

If you’re a seasoned artist, someone crafty, DIY enthusiast who likes to dabble, come check out Drop-In Maker Space. Our volunteers and community experts are there every Monday night to assist with starting a new project or helping to get over the next hurdle. The Maker Space is equipped with a Cameo Sillhouette Pro for all your crafting needs, as well as an Epilog Fusion Pro Lasercutter and the Ultimaker s5 3D Printer so there's no limit to what you could create. The Maker Space even has multiple sewing machines available for avid stitchers looking for a workspace, machine, or volunteer to help them finish a project. Like any good creator, the Maker Space is always evolving, so Drop-In to see what’s new. You don’t have to be high-tech to use the Maker Space. If you just need some room to spread out and get messy, make it in the Maker Space. Drop-In Shop is for Adults 18 and over only. Maker Safety Waiver required to participate in hands-on projects.

Kick-off the summer with a fun Henna class for tweens and teens with local artist Rachel-Anne Palacios. Learn the history of Henna/Mehndi and practice making your own designs. Each teen will also receive a professional henna by Rachel-Anne! Program is limited to tweens and teens 12 to 18, registration is required. ---- By registering you are stating that you understand that henna is a natural plant/vegetable dye and can last anywhere from one (1) to three (3) weeks; and that you have discussed with your child appropriate symbols and placement on the body for the temporary design. Drop-In Knitting & Sewing

Join an enthusiastic group of crafters on Tuesday evenings in the makerspace. All skill levels and abilities are welcome. Volunteers will be on hand for assistance with our sewing machines. Bring your own projects and supplies. No registration required.

Contra Costa County Library invites you to a free viewing of, The Truth About Reading: The Invisible Crisis Hiding in Plain Sight (2022) a film by Emmy Award winning director, Nick Nanton. Literacy experts from across America, including Emily Hanford of Sold a Story: How Teaching Kids to Read Went So Wrong and Lacey Robinson of UnboundEd, emphasize the gravity of the illiteracy crisis and share how the implementation of science and evidence-based practices can transform lives and ensure that every child learns how to read. The documentary highlights the stories of David Chalk and John Corcoran, two men who didn’t learn how to read and write until they were adults. Following their stories gives a glimpse into the hard truth of how illiteracy and sub-literacy impede a person’s ability to truly thrive. While the film illustrates the painful reality of life for individuals impacted by illiteracy, it also reminds viewers that the issue is not one that affects just a few struggling readers, but one that affects countless children and adults and weakens the very fabric of our society. Film running time: 82 minutes Registration to attend the in-person screening is not required, but if you register you will receive a reminder.
