Join us for the Pacific Beach Library's monthly book discussion!  Our group meets in a hybrid format, so you can choose whether you'd prefer to join us in-person in the PB Library's Community Room or virtually (please send an email to [email protected] for this year's Zoom login info).  May's selection is The Phoenix Crown  by Kate Quinn & Janie Chang.Description: San Francisco, 1906. In a city bustling with newly minted millionaires and scheming upstarts, two very different women hope to change their fortunes: Gemma, a golden-haired, silver-voiced soprano whose career desperately needs rekindling, and Suling, a petite and resolute Chinatown embroideress who is determined to escape an arranged marriage. Their paths cross when they are drawn into the orbit of Henry Thornton, a charming railroad magnate whose extraordinary collection of Chinese antiques includes the fabled Phoenix Crown, a legendary relic of Beijing's fallen Summer Palace. Uke players of all skill levels are invited to come together to strum, sing, learn, teach, share, and most of all, have fun. We welcome everyone at all skill levels from the newest uke noobs to total uke stars. If you’ve never strummed or sung a note in your life, or even if you are just shy, you are welcome. We do a strum along format as well as go around the room offering the chance to lead a song to everyone.  This makes it easy to be as anonymous as you like while you’re learning (you’ll never be thrust into the spotlight when that isn’t your desire). If being in the spotlight is something you seek then it is readily available.  We play a wide variety of music including Rock, Country, Standards, 23 Skidoo, Hawaiian, some goofy fun songs and more.
