The Alcatraz Gardens Stweardship Program aims to preserve the historic gardens once tended by the island's military and penitentiary residents. For more than a century, gardens were an important part of everyday life for officers, families, and prisoners confined to Alcatraz by sentence or duty. Many of the plants slected by these unheralded gardeners proved to be excellent choices for the harsh and barren enviornment, fourishing through the four decades of neglect that followed the prison's closing.Volunteers help care for the resotred gardens with activites such as weeding, pruning, composting (award winning!), planting, propagating, and seed collecting. As an added bonus, garden volunteers arrive on Alcatraz before other visitors, so you can experience the island during the most tranquil time of day!

East Black Point, a quiet and all but forgotten spot, neglected for decades, and tucked away above the hustling bustling San Francisco waterfront. Located within Fort Mason, the site was developed with gardens and pathways in the 1850s by early San Francisco residents. Sheltered from the wind and offering striking views of the bay and city, it's easy to see why the hillside was a favored place for the community to garden and stroll. With volunteer support, the beautiful garden pathways have been unearthed, the site brought back to life, and Black Point is now open to the public. Join us in stewarding this special place! We still have a lot of work to do to make this special space feel like a garden again. Volunteers will help to remove invasive species that have overwhelmed the site and revegetate the garden with a mix of native species and horticultural species that were planted by the residents over 100 years ago! Activities primarily include weeding, pruning, and planting.

Meet at the top of the main staircase, just behind the Fort Mason General's Residence. If no one is there to greet you, please walk into the gardens – we are already working on the site! *REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED*

Veteran Open House Day is the first Saturday of every month.Veterans of the Nike program come to the site to share their stories with visitors and give guided tours of SF88 between the hours of 12pm - 3pm The SF-88 Nike Missile Site is the most fully restored Nike missile site in the country. During the tense years of the Cold War, from 1953 to 1979, the United States Army built and operated close to 300 Nike missile sites in the United States. These sites were designed to be the last line of defense against H-Bomb carrying Soviet bombers that had eluded the Air Forceâs interceptor jet aircrafts. SF-88 in the Marin Headlands was one such site. Today, Golden Gate National Recreation Area works together with a dedicated group of volunteers to preserve the site as it was during operations to remind visitors of the physical and psychological effects of the Cold War on the American landscape.The only restrooms available at Nike are Port-a-Johns. However, about a mile down the road before the Nike Missile Site is a larger rest-stop / parking lot with larger restooms and running water. Open the first Sunday of every month (12pm - 4pm) Tours are given periodically throughout these open house hoursBattery Townsley at Fort Cronkhite was San Francisco's most extensiveâand most secretâWorld War II military fortification.From 1940 to 1948 it mounted two massive battleship guns and housed more than 100 soldiers in an extensive network of underground tunnels during the Cold War it was used as an underground research facility.Long closed to public access Battery Townsley has been refurbished thanks to volunteer labor and community contributions and is now ready for tours. The public is invited to visit and explore this labyrinthine fortification!In fall 2012 the park brought to this site a 16-inch gun from the USS Missouri. The gun identical to the one that was once mounted at Battery Townsley helps tell the story of the coastal defense system that later gave rise to these parklands. Learn more about this new addition.Battery Townsley is reached via a moderately strenuous hike up the Coastal Trail approximately one-half-mile north of the Rodeo Beach parking lot.For more information and further assistance to the site please call (415) 331-1540

Invasive Plant Patrol volunteers join ranger led hikes, from the Marin Headlands to Bolinas Ridge, to find and remove localized infestations of invasive weeds before they get out of controlâan ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. This program is great for those that love to hike and are interested in plant identification, both native and non-native. Hikes are approximately 4.5 hours.
