This will include eggplant, microgreens (including Mizuna) lettuce, peas, beans, Chinese cabbage, carrots, radicchio, basil and more. Maria is also a Master Food Preserver and a Master Composter. Volunteer away your fines at a rate of $20 per hour while helping the library maintain a clean and welcoming environment. Volunteers are needed to help with: Book cover cleaning - Use disinfecting wipes to reinvigorate dingy books Children's toys cleanup - Use disinfecting wipes to disinfect children's toys Material inspection - Check books for torn pages, pen marks, etc. Tabletop/windows/grounds cleanup - Help reinvigorate our branch by wiping down tabletops, cleaning dusty windows, and picking up litter and sweeping outside the library. Storytime is designed to accommodate a mix of ages and invites the entire family to participate in early literacy activities such as stories, songs, rhymes, fingerplays, and movement activities. Storytime is a fun and interactive experience for the whole family that promotes the joys of reading and learning for all ages. This program is geared for children of all ages and their parents/caregivers! Free, with limited capacity. As we navigate pandemic life, here are a few modifications to our Storytime: Seating for Storytime is available on a first-come, first-served basis. A limited number of tickets will be distributed at the Information Desk 60 minutes prior to the start of Storytime. A second Storytime session will follow the first if the first session reaches maximum capacity of 50 participants. This program is developed to align with the Early Education Quality Standards. This month - POETRY CENTER SAN JOSE PRESENTS Featured Poet: Raggedy Andey Raggedy Andey is an abandoned house-obsessed poet and mentor from Santa Cruz. In addition to her written works, she was grand-slam champion of Santa Cruz in 2015, joining her team at the National Poetry Slam in Oakland where they placed in the top 5 overall. She went on to sweep the Southwest Shootout in 2018, winning the individual competition and the group competition alongside her fellow Santa Cruz teammates. Today, she organizes an exclusive poetry series celebrating the craft of writing, and spends her days basking in the sun with her little dog Frank. Her favorite word is avid. Open mic to follow. Poetry Center San José's mission is to nurture and promote diverse literary expression in our community as a means of exploring, defining, and enriching the human experience. A lecture series presented by the Delphian Study Club - providing the opportunity for lifelong learning and friendship via lectures and events. The current series is on the topic of the History and Culture of Silicon Valley with various guest lecturers. Our May 16th topic is - Historical Musical Institutions in Silicon Valley - Guest Lecturer Deborah Rosengaus. Join us for a look at some of the longest standing cultural arts organizations on the Bay Area. We’ll take a look at their history as well as their impact and development of the musical scene. Lecturer: Deborah Martínez Rosengaus, is a versatile Mezzo Soprano having studied Opera, Theater, Music and Dance. She has toured internationally, with a variety of musical ensembles in concert halls such as: Santori Hall in Tokyo, The Center for Performing Arts in Beijing with the Peoples Liberation Army Orchestra, Disney Hall with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, The Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall. She has given recitals in Mexico and across the United States, giving voice to her research into the lesser known Art Songs of great Classical composers. Ms. Rosengaus is the recipient of several awards including the Schoenfeld Award from the Holt Memorial Scholarship Competition and 1st place in the Pacific Musical Society Competition made famous by its first winner, violinist Yehudi Menuhin. Ms. Rosengaus holds a Master of Music Degree from the Manhattan School of Music, where she studied with international opera diva Mignon Dunn, and a Bachelors from the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music. She has performed in Masterclasses with Karen Morrow and Luana Devol. She is also a featured vocalist on several independent film soundtracks. Guests are always welcome and encouraged. Free. Join Science Smart Kids in an engaging workshop about fossil identification and how they're formed. Children (age 5 to 12) will observe real fossil samples of some of the following specimens: ammonites, brachiopods, clam, coral, crinoid stem, diatomite, dinosaur bone, petrified wood, shark teeth and trilobite. Children will use photographs and an identification key to learn about these ancient creatures. Each child will make a sample of a trace fossil to take home. This program is generously sponsored by the Friends of the Willow Glen Branch Library.
