The San Rafael Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) is sponsored by the San Rafael Fire Department and coordinated by the Office of Emergency Services. This comprehensive training program prepares volunteers to respond effectively during emergencies and disasters.Training Overview: The CERT Basic Training is a comprehensive 20-hour course that combines classroom instruction with hands-on exercises. Training concludes with a final disaster simulation drill where you'll apply all the skills you've learned in a realistic emergency scenario.What You'll Learn: CERT teams are trained in basic emergency response procedures that can save lives and protect your community, including: Conducting an initial size-up of the situation in your immediate area Reducing immediate dangers by turning off utilities, suppressing small fires, and evacuating hazardous areas Performing immediate medical triage and basic treatment of injuries Assessing structural integrity and performing light search and rescue Collecting and recording vital information to be relayed to professional responders on damage, victims, and actions taken or resources needed Providing leadership to untrained volunteersWhy Join CERT? In San Rafael, a new generation of leaders is rising to meet this challenge with creativity, technical skill and a vision for a sustainable community.The City of San Rafael is proud to host this event as part of SF Climate Week, collaborating with Sustainable San Rafael and local schools to showcase the innovative climate solutions being developed by our young people.Join Sustainable San Rafael, City Councilmember Maika Llorens Gulati, and student change-makers to explore a diverse range of climate initiatives.The event kicks off with a student work showcase and open house, followed by a formal program featuring presentations, panels, demonstrations and even poetry.
