Local historian, Marcie Miller, of the Marin History Museum, will present a slide show of selected “Points of Interest” of downtown San Rafael.  Many of these are historic homes, businesses, and buildings, that connect the city to its past. Marcie is known for her historic walking tours and is an enthusiastic storyteller. She’ll share stories, some true, some not and some just scandalous. If not for concerted efforts to preserve San Rafael’s older structures, the city would not be what it is today.

Dogs are ideal reading partners, providing comfort and unconditional acceptance that can allow children to focus better and read with greater confidence. The Marin Humane Society’s SHARE a Book program is designed to help children improve their literacy skills, and to offer an opportunity for them to have fun reading – to dogs! Signups will be at the children’s desk the morning of the event. Limited spots will be available. This program is intended for emerging readers in grades 1-3 who would love some fun, low-pressure reading time. Marin Humane Society SHARE a Book es un programa diseñado para ayudar a los niños en su lectura y habilidades literarias, y al mismo tiempo ofrece la oportunidad de divertirse leyendo a los caninos! Se le atenderá por orden de llegada. Habrá una lista para registrarse en el escritorio del área de niños el día del evento. Cupo limitado. Have you ever wondered if you can eat your flowers? In some cases, you can! Many of these edible beauties are easy to grow over the course of a season. Join us as we discuss which flowers or parts of flowers are safe to eat and, also, some that you should avoid. We will cover ornamentals, herbs, flowers of fruits and vegetables and even weeds, and give you creative ideas on how to use them. Keri Pon has been a UC Marin Master Gardener since 2011. She is involved with projects at the Indian Valley Organic Farm and Garden and our Edibles Guild. She has also spoken on how to harvest your fruit and vegetables and is a contributing writer for Backyard to Belly. Jenine Stilson became a UC Marin Master Garden in 2014 and has been a member of the Edibles Guild for the last four years. She spent time growing up on her parents’ almond orchard in the heat of Yolo County and has been a life-long gardener of edibles ever since. She’s a contributing writer for Backyard to Belly and has presented at the Indian Valley Organic Farm & Garden as well as other venues around the county.

Help us celebrate National Constitution Day by joining the Handwriting the Constitution project facilitated by local artist and graphic designer, Barbara Summer and Leslie Ihrig. Handwriting the Constitution is a social art project begun in 2017 by artist Morgan O’Hara. It invites people from all walks of life to meet in public spaces to handwrite the US Constitution or other documents written to protect human rights and freedoms. This art practice was created so that people will know their rights, deepen their understanding of laws created to protect these rights, and to help resist negative thinking. To date approximately 2000 people have participated, both nationally and internationally. Join us upstairs in the Carnegie Reading Room, find your favorite passage or discover one that speaks to you. We’ll provide copies of the U.S. Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and the Declaration of Independence. We’ll supply paper, pens, and markers…or bring your own supplies. All ages are welcome. Why, you ask? This, from the founder of the project, Morgan O’Hara: “Hand copying a document can produce an intimate connection to the text and its meaning. The hand writer may discover things about this document that they never knew, a passage that challenges or moves them. They may even leave with a deeper connection to the founders and the country, or even a sense of encouragement. I began this project motivated by psychological necessity. I now see it as a social art practice.
