In celebration of Electronics Studio at STUDIO 24, we'll learn how to add a simple circuit to your book nook so that you can add glowing LED lights to your diorama. In this presentation, Martin Ogle, brings a 41-year career as a naturalist, Earth scientist and storyteller to bear in exploring how to see ourselves as Geo sapiens or Earth-wise humans.Martin shares amazing new discoveries of Earth system science and discusses their implications for sustainability, especially the need to connect this understanding to ALL Careers of the future to create a green economy. He gives examples and stories that promote a healthy balance between human endeavor and Earth's living systems in areas including manufacturing, food production and landscaping, travel, and more.A special feature will be “mini-vignettes” provided by a scientist, a high school student, a musician, and others to accentuate and focus on important aspects of the Geo sapiens idea. In this workshop series, kids will learn about coding and electronics through creative and playful activities with the BBC micro:bit, a “microcontroller” designed for students that can be used for a wide variety of electronics projects. Workshops will cover all kinds of topics including games, art, and sports,with space for kids to explore their interests. There are six unique, standalone workshops in this series and each will be focused on a different activity. Join us for one, a few, or all!These workshops are best suited for youth ages 9-11. Basic computer skills, such as the ability to use a mouse and keyboard and navigate a website, are preferred. According to makerspace policy, an adult caregiver must be present during the workshop. The 40 W laser is the only laser with the capability to use the rotary tool and etch on round surfaces. All three lasers operating at once is loud! Please be prepared to wear hearing protection.

The Office of Arts and Culture presents a lecture series as part of the Experiments in Public Art program, which serves as a city-wide laboratory expanding the potential of public art. Unlike a traditional public art, Experiments in Public Art projects are as much a civic dialogue as they are opportunities for artists to work within unconventional parameters. The lecture series is a chance for the Boulder community to learn more about the program and what the possibilities of public art can be.Today we welcome Ana María Hernando, from Argentina (b. 1959, Buenos Aires). Ana is a Colorado based multidisciplinary artist. She has a BFA from California College of the Arts, Oakland, and a BS from the National School of Education Eccleston in Buenos Aires.Ana was the 2020 Prix Henry Clews in Sculpture awarded by La Napoule Art Foundation, with a one-year residency and solo major show at their Château, France. She has exhibited in other national and international museums.In January 2024, her solo show To Let the Sky Know / Dejar que el cielo sepa, opened at Madison Square Park in New York, inaugurating the 20th anniversary of the MSP Conservancy’s public art program. A portion of this work travelled to Aspen, where it was shown in My Longing Doesn’t Quiet / Mi añoranza no se calla along with new work at Rubey Park Transit Center and Sister Cities Plaza.Ana represented Colorado in 2024 Women to Watch exhibition at the National Museum of Women in the Arts. She is a 2023 Joan Mitchell Fellow and was a 2021-2023 RedLine Resource Artist. In 2016, she participated in the initial iteration of the Experiments in Public Art series. Join the Boulder Office of Arts & Culture for a thoughtful and engaging lecture by a local or visiting artist. Free and open to the public. This hands-on workshop is an introduction to physical computing using the popular Arduino microcontroller platform and MIDI - the Musical Instrument Digital Interface: "MIDI is a technical standard that describes a communication protocol, digital interface, and electrical connectors that connect a wide variety of electronic musical instruments, computers, and related audio devices for playing, editing, and recording music."We'll learn how we can use the Arduino platform to create musical instrument user interfaces from buttons, sensor, and other input devices. And, how we can create MIDI-compatible instruments using Arduino. This workshop is most appropriate for high school-aged learners and older.Electronics StudioFrom April to June, STUDIO 24 will be dedicated to playful and practical explorations of electronics. Classes and drop-in experiences will cover a variety of topics from the fundamentals of circuits and coding to creative projects that bring technology and art together. Electronics studio experiences will be facilitated by Maker-In-Residence, Ayesha Wilson, alongside Creative Technologists and community educators. Electronics studio is for everyone! Whether you're an experienced tinkerer or you're brand new to electronics, we invite you to create, learn, and explore topics in electronics in a supportive and creative community space.

The BLDG 61 woodshop is available by appointment only. No walk-ins can be accepted, so be cool and book ahead!Make a Tool Appointment Sessions are COLOR-CODED based on the level of supervision a specific tool requires. Tools in the ‘Yellow’ category require the least staff guidance. Tools in the ‘Green’ category require some guidance. And tools in the ‘Pink’ category require the most supervision. The machines available in each session are listed below. Staff are not able to change your category. It is up to patrons to select which category provides access to the tools they need. If they do not yet know which tools they need, patrons should attend Open Studio to make a plan for their project. This group meets online using Zoom. Adult learners can attend the free online groups by registering on the Library event calendar via the blue "Begin Registration" button. The scenes can range from dramatic to intimate, with potential for humor, making the experience unpredictable and engaging. Visit during Open Studio hours to see our new makerspace in action, learn about equipment, or get hands-on with a project of your own. Staff is available for guidance with tools and materials. All experience levels and ages are welcome. Open Studio Equipment and Software: Sewing machines, Sergers, Dye Sublimation Printers, Heat Press, and design software such as the Adobe Suite and Blender on our laptops and computers. Safety and Use RequirementsAll patrons who visit the makerspaces must adhere to the Makerspace Use Policy. Minors (under 18) must have a parent/adult guardian agree to and sign the Acknowledgement of Risk and Release Form before entering the space. Patrons under the age of fourteen must be supervised by a parent or adult guardian.
