Pleaseadd the following text in your notes to parents if you haven’t sent them yet: In June 2017, the Jeffco Board ofEducation adopted a new federally-required Local WellnessPolicy. Implementing this policy as a school means we need to startthinking differently about the food and treats offered at our celebrations. In summary, the new standards include: · HolidayCelebrations- Offer at least half "healthier"food options such as no added sugar, no trans-fat, and the first threeingredients listed consisting of: vegetables, fruit, meat/beans/eggs, dairy,whole grains, or water. · Birthdays-Starting in SY 2018/19, birthday recognition/celebrations may not include sharedfood (e.g. food brought in by families for students to share). · Rewards-Do not offer food as a reward for behavior or academic performance, unlessapproved as a need by school leadership. Hereare some creative Valentines ideas with a community service/global citizenspin: · Write messages oflove, friendship, and encouragement on colorful paper, laminate them/or put inpocket protectors, and hang on the chain-link fence around our school property · Create kindness bookmarksfor each other or for another class · Use iPads to recordencouraging video messages to share with the whole school (e.g. What would yousay to someone who’s having a rough day? What would you say to someone whofeels like they don’t have any friends? What would you say to someone who’sfeeling bullied?
