Let’s warm up for Summer Reading! As a way of encouraging more interest in nonfiction reading, this program is open to all from March 30th to May 31st. Participants will read nonfiction books to fulfill the requests of various Pokémon and write them a fun fact about the book (including at the top the participant’s name, the title, and the author of the book)! Sheets are provided at the 2nd Floor Kids Desk. When the participant is done with their nonfiction book, they may hand their filled out section to the librarians at the children’s desk in exchange for a sticker. During this challenge, participants will choose if they’re on the Fire Team, Water Team, or Grass Team, and try to earn all ten starters for each type plus an Eevee and a Pikachu! When their sheet is complete, they may hand it in to earn a Legendary Pokémon sticker and be done for the spring, choose to start the process all over again and read more books to push their team ahead in the rankings, or try and complete their starter collection by switching teams entirely! It’s all up to them! Where: Children’s Information Desk When: Monday, March 30th through Sunday, May 31st Why: To encourage nonfiction reading in people of all ages! This program is designed to boost children’s reading fluency and comprehension skills, teach how stories are built, & help children practice teamwork and decision-making.     More about Paper Mario the Thousand Year Door:I’m going to tell you the story of the Thousand-Year Door. An awfully long time ago in a strange and far-off land, a big bustling town thrived. It was a town where all people lived very happy lives and it was said that the town was very prosperous… But one day… A great cataclysm struck the town and its people. Darkness filled the skies, and the earth roared and shook. It was as if the very world had come to a violent end and in but a single night… the town sank into the depths of the earth. Many moons rose and set… Stories of the town passed into the pages of fairy tales and when the town’s site no longer held relics of the past, people gathered at that spot and built a new town, Rogueport. But word soon spread among the people who moved in… that an ancient city lay deep underground and that a magnificent treasure rested there. This is the tale of the quest for the legendary treasure of Rogueport and of the Thousand-Year Door…     More about Game Explorers:Game Explorers is all about showcasing how video games can provide value to a child’s life by using them as tools to explore storytelling techniques and in turn bolstering their reading, writing, and listening skills. Rather than have children staring blankly at a screen, Game Explorers has them engaging with the text, making decisive decisions as a team, answering questions, and following instructions. Children do not have direct control of the game, instead they work together as a team to help navigate the instructor. The gameplay is interrupted by discussion of the characters, setting, and themes of the story. This program is best for Children who can MOSTLY read independently. The group will work together to help sound out long or difficult words. Children should be made aware that they will NOT be actively holding the controller at all times.

“here in my hands is a book about disappointment”: Reading about Reading in Virginia Evans’s The Correspondent Join us for our annual literature lecture and discussion, featuring one of the most popular books of the past year: The Correspondent.  In a letter addressed to Mr. Larry McMurtry on December 10, 2018, Sybil Van Antwerp, the tortured heroine of Virginia Evans’s The Correspondent (2025), describes her experiences reading McMurtry’s Lonesome Dove. She writes to him, “I was sitting there thinking here in my hands is a book about disappointment” (254). Sybil’s description of reading McMurtry’s novel reflects the readers’ own experience of reading The Correspondent. During our discussion, we will consider the ways this brilliant epistolary novel illustrates not only Sybil’s disappointments but also her reading preferences—and discover our own reading preferences in the process. Aimee Pozorski has authored Roth and Trauma: The Problem of History in the Later Works (2011), Falling After 9/11: Crisis in American Art and Literature (2014), and AIDS-Trauma and Politics (2019). The fourth book in her trauma tetralogy, Sex, Drugs, and Gentrification: Housing Trauma in the American City is forthcoming in 2026.  She has edited or co-edited volumes on the topics of Philip Roth, American Modernism, and HIV/AIDS representation. With Maren Scheurer, she co-edited the peer-reviewed journal, Philip RothStudies from 2019-2024 and the Bloomsbury Handbook to Philip Roth (2024). She is Professor of English at Central Connecticut State University, where she also directs the certificate in Racial Justice.
