How Money Became God: Rethinking Wealth and Greed in Modern Society with Paul VignaREGISTER & SUBMIT QUESTIONS HERE via Digital Livestream or on-demand Join us for an eye-opening conversation with veteran journalist Paul Vigna as we examine his provocative book, The Almightier: How Money Became God, Greed Became Virtue, and Debt Became Sin, in which he explores the question: how did money go from a tool of commerce into the dominant faith of modern society? In The Almightier, Vigna takes readers on a sweeping historical journey from Renaissance Florence to todayâs global financial markets, revealing how wealth accumulation evolved from a moral failing into an unspoken civic virtue. He uncovers the forgotten history of money, tracing the uneasy and often accidental alliance between wealth and religion as it developed from ancient city-states to todayâs secular world, where religious devotion has receded and greed has stepped in to fill the void. Through engaging anecdotes, original research, and fresh perspectives on the causes of the many challenges we face today, Vigna makes a compelling argument that money has no power apart from the power we give it. Whether you are interested in economic history, personal finance, or the hidden cultural forces shaping modern life, this talk is sure to pique your interest. Register today to learn more about how devotion to money has replaced religion as the foundation of our society.

Norman Rockwell: Inclusion, Exclusion and Representing America (ZOOM)Thursday, November 12, from 6:00 â 7:00 pm Registration Required. This virtual program will take place on Zoom. Register HERE to receive the meeting link via email. The Roxbury, Bridgewater, and Washington libraries are proud to continue their collaborative programming and bring enriching cultural experiences to the community. The upcoming virtual program, Norman Rockwell: Inclusion, Exclusion and Representing America is presented by Jane Oneail. The program explores the work of one of Americaâs most beloved illustrators through a contemporary lens. Norman Rockwell is celebrated for depicting and defining American life, creating memorable images that captured universal experiences of joy, belonging, loneliness, and resilience. His paintings often portray the bittersweet emotions of people feeling left out or left behindâexperiences that continue to resonate with audiences today. At the same time, Rockwellâs work raises important questions about representation. Although he chronicled American life throughout much of the 20th century, his illustrations largely omitted the nationâs cultural and racial diversity. It was only later in his career that Rockwell created several powerful paintings addressing race in America. These works can be understood as a natural extension of his lifelong interest in themes of inclusion, exclusion, and the human experience. During this presentation, Oneail will examine Rockwellâs artistic legacy, tracing the evolution of his work and inviting participants to consider how his paintings both reflected and shaped ideas of America. Through art, history, and discussion, attendees will gain new perspectives on one of the countryâs most iconic artists. About the presenter: Jane Oneail is the founder of Culturally Curious, a company that curates and presents art appreciation programs. Jane holds a masterâs in Art History from Boston University and a masterâs in Education from Harvard University. Born and raised in NH, she has worked at some of the stateâs most esteemed cultural institutions, including the League of New Hampshire Craftsmen, where she served as Executive Director, and the Currier Museum of Art, where she held the role of Senior Educator. Jane has also taught at the college level for more than a decade, most recently at Southern New Hampshire University.

November Artist: DesirĂŠe AlvarezNovember 3 â 28 during library hours Reception & Poetry Reading: Saturday, November 14, 4:00 â 6:00 pm. Open to all. Burnham Library will host an exhibition of paintings by poet and painter DesirĂŠe Alvarez from November 3 through November 28, 2026, during library hours. A reception and poetry reading will take place Saturday, November 14, from 4 to 6 p.m. where Alvarez will read selections from her new poetry collection, Oyster Saloon. A fourth-generation Bridgewater resident who spent her childhood in town, Alvarez draws inspiration from the landscape she knows so well. Her paintings are inspired by living with nature and gardening in Bridgewater, exploring an ecstatic relationship with the outdoors and the secret connections between humans, animals, and plants. Her new collection, Oyster Saloon, is also deeply rooted in the landscape of her childhood. Alvarez is the author of three poetry collections: Devilâs Paintbrush, winner of the May Sarton New Hampshire Poetry Award Raft of Flame, winner of Omnidawnâs Lake Merritt Poetry Award and Oyster Saloon. Her poetry and visual art have received support from the New York Foundation for the Arts, Foundation for Contemporary Arts, American Academy of Arts and Letters, and Poets House. Her work has appeared in numerous publications, including Poetry Magazine, The Massachusetts Review, Ecotone, and LitHub. She exhibits her paintings nationally and internationally, teaches at The Juilliard School and the City University of New York, and currently has poetry, paintings, and drawings featured at Kentler International Drawing Space in New York City. The exhibition offers the community an opportunity to experience Alvarezâs visual art and celebrate the landscape and local connections that continue to inform her creative work. The November 14 reception and reading will provide a chance to meet the artist and hear poetry from her latest collection. The reception & poetry reading are free and open to the public.
