The David M. Hunt Library will celebrate National Quilt Day with a special exhibition, Quilts of Many Colors, on Saturday, March 21, from 5 to 7 PM.  With the arrival of the first days of spring, this showcase of over a dozen quilts reveals the creativity, skill, and community spirit of local crafters.  Quilts will be available for purchase with a portion of proceeds benefiting the library. The exhibition will be on display during operating hours through Friday, April 17. At the center of the exhibition is a twin‑size community quilt, a collaborative project spearheaded by library volunteer Ruth Giumarro.  It took shape in early January at a meeting of 11 locals, some who were new to quilting and eager to give it a try.  They each committed to making two to four 10-inch squares in any style, resulting in a richly varied and visually engaging piece.  At the heart of the quilt is an embroidery by Gail Allyn of the nature spirit the Green Man.  Seen in terracotta tile at the entrance to the library, the Green Man represents rebirth and regeneration and is a herald of spring.  The quilt will be offered for sale, with all proceeds benefiting the David M. Hunt Library and supporting its cultural programming. Project leader Ruth Giumarro said, “Stitch by stitch, we pieced together more than a quilt we made new friendships, learned new techniques. We were inspired by Dolly Parton’s 1971 song, A Coat of Many Colors, so each square in our Quilt of Many Colors tells a story, each story becoming part of a community made stronger by every hand that touched it.” The quilters also share their diverse visions with their own lap quilts, baby quilts and wall hangings.  The participating quilters are project leader Ruth Giumarro, Green Man embroiderer Gail Allyn, Maria Bulson, Erika Crofut, Elizabeth Frey‑Thomas, Frank Halden, Donna Heinz, John Hodgson, Natalie Holland, Kim Kaufman, Barbara Lobdell, Sherry Newman, and Mary Randolph. In addition, there will be a storybook quilt made by local kids under the guidance of Anna Pattison, the library’s director of children’s programming. At the reception on March 21, visitors will have the opportunity to meet the makers, learn about their techniques and inspirations, and enjoy the wide range of patterns, colors, and traditions represented in their work. From contemporary designs to pieces rooted in classic quilt making, the exhibition celebrates both individual artistry and the shared joy of creating together.  The event is free and open to all. Light refreshments will be served.

The David M. Hunt Library will launch the Hunt VideoWall, a new showcase dedicated to short films by independent filmmakers, with its inaugural screening on Saturday, March 28 at 6 PM.  Mail Myself to You (2024) and Circle, Circle, Square (2025), two films by Imogen Pranger, will be shown followed by a conversation with Pranger and VideoWall curator Yonah Sadeh. A documentary filmmaker and animator based in Brooklyn, New York, Pranger’s work utilizes the tactility of 16-millimeter film and handcrafted animation.  Mail Myself to You has been screened at the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival, Backyard Docs Film Festival, Reading Film Festival, and the Athens International Film and Video Festival where it received a Special Jury Mention.

On Saturday, April 4th at 2 pm local history teacher and author Peter Vermilyea will speak about his new book, Litchfield County and the Revolutionary War. Vermilyea’s talk will focus on Litchfield resident Oliver Wolcott Sr. who was a Revolutionary War patriot, signer of the Declaration of Independence, and Brigadier General of the Connecticut militia. Wolcott also oversaw the transportation of a toppled statue of King George III from New York City to his hometown, where it was melted down and turned into more than forty thousand musket balls. Litchfield County and the Revolutionary War reveals how liberty, sacrifice, and resilience in a small corner of New England helped shape the destiny of a new nation. Peter Vermilyea teaches history at Housatonic Valley Regional High School in Falls Village, Connecticut, and for the University of Connecticut. Vermilyea is the author or editor of six books, including Hidden History of Litchfield County, which received the 2015 CultureMax Award  Wicked Litchfield County and Litchfield County and the Civil War.

On Saturday, April 11th at 1 pm at the David M. Hunt Library, author Thomas E. Johnson, Jr. will discuss “The Public Library in America: a Key Post-Independence Institution Promoting the Common Good”.  Johnson is the author of “Common Place: The Public Library, Civil Society and Early American Values”.  The theory of the commons is an important part of the liberal philosophy which undergirded the American Revolution 250 years ago. The role of Benjamin Franklin, the “father of the public library,” in introducing and spreading commons thinking and action, including the first public libraries, will be highlighted at the outset featuring material from Walter Isaacson’s recent book, “The Greatest Sentence Ever Written,” about the drafting of the Declaration of Independence in 1776.  The talk will then cover the contents of Common Place, beginning with the history of public libraries in New England. One of the book’s case studies will then be featured – the Scoville Memorial Library in Salisbury. For the final part of the talk the author will cover the future of the public library, beginning with their expansion during the Progressive Era including with support from Andrew Carnegie. Recent survey results on public perception of libraries and their use will then be covered. Finally, first-time research results on the link between library support and use, and public social capital, well-being and opportunity will argue for public libraries as a prominent contemporary institution in the commons particularly in the looming age of AI disruption. A Q&A period will conclude the session. Books will be available for purchase and signing after the talk.
