The David M. Hunt Library in Falls Village, CT is pleased to present Catching Light, 75, a new exhibition of paintings by Janet Andre Block, a contemporary artist based in New York City and Connecticut.  Celebrating a milestone year in the artist’s life and practice, the exhibition features recent paintings including a series of tiny 2×2 inch artworks on magnets.   The public is invited to an opening reception on Saturday, May 23, from 5 to 7 PM and an Art Talk on Thursday, June 4 at 5:30 PM.  The exhibition will remain on display through June 19. In Catching Light, 75, Janet Andre Block continues her long engagement with the shifting presence of light—how it animates objects, alters mood, and reveals meaning in the everyday. Her paintings return to familiar subjects, often singular and deceptively simple in composition—a single building, a single flower or fruit—yet each canvas feels newly discovered, shaped by intuition, curiosity, and a disciplined commitment to the act of looking.

The David M. Hunt Library welcomes Connecticut storyteller Denise Manning Keyes Page to the Center on Main on Saturday, June 20th at 2 pm to share the story of her ancestor, Alfred C. Manning. She will share two parts of the trilogy “Legacy of a Wealthy Slave.”  In it she tells of her mother’s orphaned childhood and of how she, Denise, came to learn of her ancestors’ story.  It is the story of a formerly enslaved man, her great-great grandfather in Edenton, NC, who purchases his freedom, moves to New Haven, registers a patent for his invention, buys property, and sends two of his sons to Yale University, from which they graduated in 1880 and 1881. Ms. Page will share more about the unfolding of Mr. Manning’s fascinating “enslavement to autonomy” story during this performance.

“Connecticut Tunes and Tales of the Revolution” with Kent Besocke will kick off the library’s summer concert series with the Falls Village Recreation Commission on Friday, June 26th at 6 pm on the library lawn. This unique, hour-long musical program celebrates Connecticut’s pivotal role in the American Revolution. Weaving together captivating storytelling with songs, acoustic guitar, 5-string banjo, and mandolin, this engaging program explores Connecticut’s rich tapestry of history, folklore, and legendary figures from a tumultuous era, uncovering hidden stories of local heroes and dramatic moments that shaped the fight for freedom. Participants are invited to bring chairs, blankets, food and beverages to enjoy during the concert.

The David M. Hunt Library is pleased to announce Time Passages, a new exhibition of paintings by regional artist Ken Musselman opening with a reception for the artist on Saturday June 27, 5-7PM.  The exhibition will remain on display through July 31. Musselman’s paintings—often populated by expressive animals, cinematic references, and visual jokes—have earned him a devoted following throughout the region. His ability to blend narrative, nostalgia, and whimsy has made his work instantly recognizable and deeply cherished.  Time Passages focuses on Ken’s photorealistic still life paintings, landscapes, barnscapes, and cowscapes.  Including his miniature paintings on four-inch easels, the exhibition brings together a selection of works that celebrate his signature style while marking a moment of transition in his life and career.  The artist is moving from the Northwest Corner to a new home and studio elsewhere in the region and is looking to sell much of his current work while planning the next chapter of his creative life. As Ken says, “everything must go.” The exhibition will remain on view during regular library hours through July 31. The exhibition is part of the Hunt Library’s mission to support regional artists and foster cultural engagement within the community. The gallery is open during regular library hours, and admission is free.

Native plant curious?  Join the Falls Village Gardeners from 11 am to 2 pm on Saturday, June 27th, to learn more about gardening and landscaping with native plants. Volunteers will be on hand at the Village Green next to 107 Main Street to answer questions and distribute brochures featuring a map and garden descriptions for self-guided tours of downtown Falls Village native plantings.  Explore our village and the gardens that have been planted to create beauty, enhance ecological sustainability, provide wildlife and pollinator habitat, and support biodiversity. At noon, stop by David M. Hunt Library at 63 Main Street for a guided walk with the garden designers Page Dickey and Deb Munson, who planned the library native gardens. There will be a native plant sale from 11 am to 2 pm on the Village Green, with plants from Lindera, the Falls Village native plant nursery.  Michele Paladino will be on hand to answer your questions about native plants, their habits and uses for natives in your landscape.  This event will be held rain or shine.
