This week we will be reading Victory by Joseph Conrad.Axel Heyst, a dreamer and a restless drifter, believes he can avoid suffering by cutting himself off from others. Then he becomes involved in the operation of a coal company on a remote island in the Malay Archipelago, and when it fails he turns his back on humanity once more. But his life alters when he rescues a young English girl, Lena, from Zangiacomo's Ladies' Orchestra and the evil innkeeper Schomberg, taking her to his island retreat. The affair between Heyst and Lena begins with her release, but the relationship shifts as Lena struggles to save Heyst from the detachment and isolation that have inhibited and influenced his life. Marked by a violent and tragic conclusion, Victory is both a tale of rescue and adventure and a perceptive study of a complex relationship and of the power of love.The A.M. “Votes for Women”: Suffrage Since 1776, with Sacred Heart University Professors Jennifer McLaughlin and Dr. Kelly MarinoAmerican women took to the streets during the Revolutionary War, protesting British taxation policies and boycotting British goods. Their fight for political rights continued after independence. Recognizing that women had long campaigned for equal citizenship and suffrage, Professor McLaughlin and Dr. Marino highlight key events and figures in the struggle for the vote from 1776 through the passage of the Nineteenth Amendment in 1920. After the Civil War, the movement for women’s rights became more formalized and complex, drawing in women from multiple backgrounds, yet even after 1920, full political equality remained out of reach.This free, in-person program is co-sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Ridgefield and the Ridgefield Library.  Light refreshments will be served.Please register below.

Join other interested gamers in grades 2-12 to learn the basics of playing the Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG) from educator Mike Garguilo. If you know the basics, learn strategies and deck-building tips to maximize your own deck. All levels welcome, and it is not necessary to own cards or a complete deck to participate. Registration is required for each session. Please register in advance to receive the Zoom link.Margaret Gibson, CT State Poet Laureate (2019-2022) Emerita, has published 14 books of poems and has received the Connecticut Book Award twice. She edited the anthology Waking Up to the Earth: Connecticut Poets in a Time of Global Climate Crisis. Ines P. Rivera Prosdocimi is a poet, comparatist, and Caribbeanist. Her poetry collection Love Letter to an Afterlife was a finalist for the 2019 International Latino Book Awards. She is an associate professor at the University of Hartford. David Thacker’s first poetry collection, Some Hard Stars, is forthcoming in April. He was selected by Tracy K. Smith for Best New Poets.
