“Poetry is nearer to vital truth than history.” ~ PlatoPoetry has the unique power to bring to life the pivotal moments that have shaped our nation, capturing the spirit of the American people. In this three-part exploration of American poetry since 1776, we’ll read and discuss poems that reflect the struggles and triumphs of our nation. And while we’ll revisit several poems you undoubtedly studied in school – “Oh Captain! Join us online as we host an engaging lineup of Connecticut poets for an evening of poetry and community, led by Ridgefield Poet Laureate Emerita Barb Jennes.Dianne Bilyak, a graduate of the Institute of Sacred Music and Arts, is a Connecticut disability rights advocate. Her poetry collection Against the Turning was published by Amherst Writers & Artists Press in 2011. Her work has appeared in The Massachusetts Review, The Tampa Review, Drunken Boat, and elsewhere.Victoria Buitron hails from Ecuador. Her debut poetry collection, Unburying the Bones—2025's VersoFrontera inaugural prize winner—will be published by Texas Review Press. A recipient of a 2023 Artistic Excellence Award form the CT Office of the Arts, she serves as series editor for the Connecticut Literary Anthology.Michael Cervas taught high school English for 42 years, including 34 years at Westminster School, where he led the creative writing program. Although retired from full-time teaching, Michael directs two visiting writers programs. His four poetry collections, including Even Here (2020), were published by Antrim House Press.Stanford M. Forrester is past president of the Haiku Society of America and founding editor of Bottle Rockets. He holds many honors for his haiku work, including the Museum of Haiku Literature Award. His latest book is designated driver, a collection of haiku, senryu and small poems. Stanford’s Japanese pen name is sekiro—“dew on a stone.”Becky Rodia Schoenfeld’s poems have appeared in The Cream City Review, The Indiana Review, The Laurel Review, Poet Lore, and elsewhere. Her chapbook, Another Fire, was published by Adastra Press in 1997. People tend to think of plants as mere objects, but research has led to some perspective-shifting discoveries about trees and other plant life. In this presentation, Woodcock Nature Center educator Tommy McCarthy will share some fascinating facts about the plant kingdom and also let you in on some great books to read if you’re interested in learning even more!Tommy is an Environmental Educator at Woodcock Nature Center. Claude Monet studied the effect of light on colors by painting the same subject under a wide variety of conditions. The series for which he is best known are haystacks, the poplars, water lilies, Rouen Cathedral, and the Houses of Parliament.In this colored pencil course, using his works as a guide, we will emulate Monet and learn how to depict a chosen landscape at various times of day. The primary focus will be on the different aspects of light, and how each unique situation shifts the color palette. We will also explore whether light intensifies or desaturates hues, depending on its source (sun, moon, street lamp), or hour (dawn, midday, sunset and night-time) or atmospheric conditions (mist, fog, etc.). Rudimentary experience with colored pencils is an advantage.Please register for the first session on 10/17 and you will be considered registered for all five classes.
