Teen Advisory Board is a group for teens in grades 6-12 who are interested in volunteering and taking an active role in teen services and programs at Pequot Library. TAB will meet monthly to help plan programs, give input on the Young Adult collection, and otherwise influence how the library serves teens. We will also call on TAB members to assist with Pequot Library events and help with other library tasks as needed. You can earn community service hours for attending meetings, staffing events, and helping out around the library. Snacks are included! For grades 6-12.

A winter garden is truly a low maintenance affair–no weeding, no watering and no dead-heading! Plants with brightly colored berries, twigs, stems, foliage, and even winter-blooming flowers shrug off the snow and cold and bring cheer, even as the sun enters Capricorn. Landscape horticulturalist Warren Leach, and author of the new book from Timber Press, Plants for the Winter Garden, will showcase gardens he has designed that celebrate the winter season as well as planting design ideas for your own garden. Plants for the Winter Garden was recently named one of the American Horticultural Society’s Best New Garden Books of 2025. Copies will be available for purchase and signing thanks to Barrett Bookstore. This program is generously underwritten by Jed DuGuid and Will Hibbs of Oliver Nurseries.

Instead of marriage, Jacquotte dreams of joining the seafarers and smugglers whose tall-masted ships cluster in the turquoise waters around Tortuga. Feminist philosopher Dr. Lindsey Stewart’s book, The Conjuring of America: Mojos, Mermaids, Medicine, and 400 Years of Black Women’s Magic, tells the stories of Negro Mammies of slavery the Voodoo Queens and Blues Women of Reconstruction and the Granny Midwives and textile weavers of the Jim Crow era. These women, in secrecy and subterfuge, courageously and devotedly continued their practices and worship for centuries and passed down their traditions. Conjure informs our lives in ways remarkable and ordinary—from traditional medicines that informed the creation of Vicks VapoRub and the rise of Aunt Jemima’s Pancake Mix, to the original magic of Disney’s The Little Mermaid (2023), and the true origins of the all-American classic blue jean. From the moment enslaved Africans first arrived on these shores, conjure was heavily regulated and even outlawed. Now, Stewart uncovers new contours of American history, sourcing letters from the enslaved, dispatches from the lore of Oshun and other African mystics. The Conjuring of America is a love letter to the real magic Black women used, their herbs, food, textiles, song, and dance, used to sow rebellion, freedom, and hope.
