There are many types of mushrooms in our region.  Some are poisonous, but their ecology is fun to learn about…and others are simply delicious!  Ryan Bouchard and Emily Schmidt, New England’s leading mushroom hunting teachers, will lead us into the forest for a close loo......More

There are many types of mushrooms in our region.  Some are poisonous, but their ecology is fun to learn about…and others are simply delicious!  Ryan Bouchard and Emily Schmidt, New England’s leading mushroom hunting teachers, will lead us into the forest for a close look at local fungi in their natural habitats.  They will explain the basics of mushroom science and safety, demonstrate helpful collecting tools and wild mushroom photography, and put special emphasis on the summer species that are considered “safe for beginners” to cook with.  This class will show you inside a whole world of adventure that most people overlook. Recommended for adults and mature kids.  A waiver is required for all participants and will be available prior to the hike. Participants should bring cameras, or phones (ringers off please).  Location:  Avery Farm Nature Preserve, Ledyard (55 Avery Hill Rd, Ledyard, CT 06339-1202). We will meet at the entrance off of 184.  Take a left on Flanders Road (at Colonial Tire) and drive to the end of that road which becomes a dirt road and then to the parking area.  The hiking will not be difficult, but don’t wear your best pants and shoes.  Students should bring cameras, or phones (ringers off please).   About the Instructors:  Ryan T. Bouchard is the author and photographer of the influential book Gourmet Mushrooms of the Northeast (2019).  Emily Bouchard also studies our local mushroom species (and wild plants as well), and invents new ways to use these special ingredients creatively.  Together, Ryan and Emily Bouchard established The Mushroom Hunting Foundation. Exchanges: Bridges Beyond Boundaries—July 26th at La Grua Center (32 Water Street, Stonington) Music of Chopin, Bizet, Villa-Lobos, Sherwin, and others Experience this captivating concert by Kevin Sherwin that explores the rich emotional landscapes and cultural contexts of iconic works of the classical tradition, alongside new musical discoveries and original compositions by Sherwin. As part of the performance, Sherwin offers descriptive insights that draw on literature, visual art, and the musical culture of the composer’s time. About Kevin Sherwin Guitarist, composer, and conductor Kevin Sherwin has been praised as “absolutely superb,” with an immense capacity for self-expression” (Fanfare Magazine). Following his solo debuts at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and Regent Hall in London, England, he has toured throughout North America in numerous programs reflecting his work as a composer and cultural historian. As a composer, he has received commissions from Independent Curators International and the Bruce Museum of Art, and his works have been performed at Pershing Square Signature Center and Merkin Hall. He recently made his conducting debut at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall with the Mahanaim Orchestra, and serves on the conducting faculty of the undergraduate Mahanaim Music Program in Huntington, New York.
