Join the West Hartford Caribbean American Heritage Committee and West Hartford Public Library to continue our celebration of Caribbean American Heritage Month with a presentation by local educator, activist, and community organizer Leslie Perry. This presentation will shine a light on the history of Connecticut's Caribbean community and their countless contributions to the state. At an early age, Mr. Perry was committed to serve. While living in Mamaroneck, New York he became active in the NAACP Youth Group and participated in fighting against discrimination in housing and other civil rights activities. He attended Westchester Community College and transferred to the University of Hartford in 1966. Upon graduating in 1967 he was recruited by the University of Hartford and The Hartford Board of Education as a teacher during the revolt of the late 1960’s. Mr. Perry is a founder and Executive Director of Taste of the Caribbean and Jerk Festival founded in 2006. The event pulls people together and promotes cultural diversity in art, music, food and dance of the English, French and Spanish Caribbean.Registration required.

During this presentation, historian John Mills of the Alex Breanne Corporation will delve into the circumstances, events, and social conditions that shaped perspectives in Connecticut leading into Juneteenth.The Alex Breanne Corporation is an organization focused on promoting social clarity and informed context regarding the African-American experience through research, interrogation and presentation of lesser known stories representing the life experience of the American enslaved, presented from an African-American perspective.Registration required.
