Writing Sprints with Tessa Smith McGovern

Stay accountable with two free weekly virtual writing workshops from WestportWRITES! The Westport Library is delighted to present two, free weekly Writing Sprints to Prompts and an AMA (âAsk Me Anythingâ) with award-winning author and teacher TessaÂ Smith McGovern. This is like a write-in but with extras âŚit's writing time followed by a 30-minute Q&A where you can ask TessaÂ anything about writing, publishing, or marketing your stories (including where and how to submit for publication). When?: Daytimes: Every Tuesday from 12-1:30 pm ET Evenings: Every Wednesday from 6-7:30 pm ET Weâll chat for the first few minutes and thenÂ Tessa will share some prompts and first lines which writers can use, tweak or ignore. The time can be spent on new words or world-building, revising â anything at all â doesnât even have to be creative writing. Then weâll write for 50 minutes, after which we'll have a 30-minute Q&A where we discuss writing goals and obstacles (and tips to overcome them) for the coming week, as well as that week's submissions. Verso Studios and Verso University Present: Music Production 101 Series for High School Students

Whether you're just getting started or have some experience with beat-making or recording, this Music Production 101 Series is for you. Why You Should Sign UpDesigned specifically for beginners and taught by industry professionals, this four-week informational course (running October 4-25) will guide you through the entire pre-production process â giving you an understanding of the fundamentals of music production from recording, to mixing, to learning the basics of mastering and creating your own beat. (See below for the full curriculum.) This is a hands-on, creative program open to students in and outside Westport. Over the four weeks, you'll explore popular software like Ableton and FL Studio, experiment with song structure, collaborate with peers, and leave with a more comprehensive understanding of the music production process from start to finish. No prior training needed â just bring your interest, creativity, and a laptop! Registering registers you for all four classes in the series. Instructor BiosKenneth "Kenny O" Ortiz is an American Grammy-nominated record executive, A&R manager, and consultant. As the CEO of World Trade Entertainment, Ortiz has led efforts that have resulted in 175 million records sold, and he has been instrumental in the careers and successes of Pharrell Williams and The Neptunes, Rodney Jerkins, SWV ("Human Nature Remix" and "Downtown"), Ne-Yo, Jazmine Sullivan, Missy Elliott, and Timbaland. Kenny's innovative A&R and promotion skills through the 1980s, 90s, 2000s, and 2010s have been instrumental in bringing numerous musical artists and figures across multiple genres to multi-platinum sales and legendary status, including but not limited to Mellow Man Ace (the first Spanish rapper ever signed to a major label and the first to go platinum launching 1980's House Music), Pharrell Williams, The Neptunes, SWV, Destiny's Child, The Luniz, MC Hammer, Brian McKnight, Martha Wash, Anita Baker, Tracy Chapman, Keith Sweat, BeBe Winans, CeCe Winans, Ryan Toby of City High, Mantronix, Simply Red, The Cure, and Ten Thousand Maniacs. Born and raised in Bridgeport, Nate Barnes is a Grammy-nominated musician, producer, and educator with more than 30 years experience. Nate developed a love of music from a very young age, which led him to study at Berklee College of Music in Boston, earning a dual BA in Professional Music and Music Business Management. Nate has played with artists such as John Mayer, George Duke, and Stevie Wonder and has also performed alongside George Clinton, Judy Collins, Joe Sample, and many others. He was also a subject in the book, Teens with Physical Disabilities, written by Glenn Cheney and went on to be honored on behalf of the State of Connecticut by the Music and Arts Center for Humanity with the 2009 Pat Hart Award, recognizing outstanding commitment to the arts. Common Ground Initiative: 'Somebody Should Do Something' With Michael Brownstein, Alex Madva, and Daniel Kelly

Changing the world is difficult â but attainable through the choices we make every day. Join Michael Brownstein, Alex Madva, and Daniel Kelly, the authors ofÂ Somebody Should Do Something, as they paint a picture of how social change happens, one choice at a time. Alongside moderator Sharon Suchotliff, principal at ZS Consultants and a member of the Library's Common Ground Initiative, this panel will delve into a novel and scientific approach to creating transformative social change â and the surprising ways that each of us can help make a real difference. Copies of Somebody Should Do SomethingÂ will be available for purchase at this event. Crucial issues like climate change, racism, and poverty, are structural. They emerge from our collective practices: laws, economies, history, culture, norms, and built environments. The dilemma is that there is no way to make structural change without individual people making different â more structure-facing â decisions. In Somebody Should Do Something, Michael Brownstein, Alex Madva, and Daniel Kelly show us how we can connect our personal choices to structural change and why individual choices matter, though not in the way people usually think. Taking inspiration from the writer Bill McKibben, they stress how one âimportant thing an individual can do is be somewhat less of an individual.â Organized into three main sections, the book first diagnoses the problem of âeither/orâ thinking about social change, which stems from the false choice of making better personal choices or changing the system. The narrative then offers a different way to think about social change, anchored in a new picture of human nature emerging across the social sciences. Finally, the authors explore ways of putting this picture into practice. Neither a how-to manual nor an activistâs guide, Somebody Should Do Something pairs stories and science (plus some jokes) to help readers recognize their own power, turning resignation about climate change and racial injustice into actions that transform the world. Michael Brownstein is professor and chair of philosophy at John Jay College and professor of philosophy at The Graduate Center, CUNY. He is the author of The Implicit Mind. Alex Madva is professor of philosophy, director of the California Center for Ethics and Policy, and co-director of the Digital Humanities Consortium at Cal Poly Pomona. He is a co-editor of An Introduction to Implicit Bias and The Movement for Black Lives. Daniel Kelly is professor of philosophy at Purdue University. He is the author of Yuck! The Nature and Moral Significance of Disgust (MIT Press).
