Author Talk: Pulitzer Prize-Winning Author Richard Russo on His New Essay Collection, 'Life and Art'

Register Here Author Richard Russo is bringing his newest essay collection, Life and Art, to The Westport Library! Enjoy an insightful conversation between Russo and popular book reviewer Suzanne Leopold as they discuss his new release. About Life and Art Across his distinguished career as a writer, Russo's novels have intimately captured the human experience — and his newest essay collection Life and Art is no different. Life and Art — these are the twin subjects considered in Richard Russo’s 12 masterful new essays — how they inform each other and how the stories we tell ourselves about both shape our understanding of the world around us. In The Lives of Others, he reflects on the implacable fact that writers use people, insisting that what matters, in the end, is how and for what purpose. How do you bridge the gap between what you know and what you don’t, and sometimes can’t, know? Why tell a story in the first place? What we don’t understand, Russo opines, is in fact the very thing that beckons to us. In Stiff Neck, he writes of the exasperating fault lines exposed within his own family as his wife’s sister and her husband — proudly unvaccinated — develop COVID. In 2002 he received the Pulitzer Prize for Empire Falls, which, like Nobody’s Fool, won multiple awards for its screen adaptation, and in 2023 his novel Straight Man was adapted into the television series Lucky Hank. In 2017 he received France’s Grand Prix de Littérature Américaine. He lives in Portland, Maine. Suzanne Leopold is the creator of SuzyApproved.com, where she shares book reviews to an audience of over 10 thousand. She is also the founder of Suzy Approved Book Tours, where she aggregates her community of bloggers across social media platforms to support authors with book launches. Writing Sprints with Tessa Smith McGovern

Stay accountable with two free weekly virtual writing workshops from WestportWRITES! The Westport Library is delighted to present two, free weekly Writing Sprints to Prompts and an AMA (“Ask Me Anything”) with award-winning author and teacher Tessa Smith McGovern. This is like a write-in but with extras …it's writing time followed by a 30-minute Q&A where you can ask Tessa anything about writing, publishing, or marketing your stories (including where and how to submit for publication). When?: Daytimes: Every Tuesday from 12-1:30 pm ET Evenings: Every Wednesday from 7-8:30 pm ET We’ll chat for the first few minutes and then Tessa will share some prompts and first lines which writers can use, tweak or ignore. The time can be spent on new words or world-building, revising – anything at all – doesn’t even have to be creative writing. Then we’ll write for 50 minutes, after which we'll have a 30-minute Q&A where we discuss writing goals and obstacles (and tips to overcome them) for the coming week, as well as that week's submissions. Andrew Wilk Presents The Westport Library Medical Series: Advances in Breast Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment

Register Here The Westport Library and Andrew Wilk are excited to bring back the Westport Library Medical Series. This series is an opportunity for the community to learn about important medical issues, aiming to provide both practical and thought-provoking information that can help individuals navigate the complex world of medicine. Dr. Robert Altbaum, a longtime Westport internist, will moderate the sessions and introduce experts in the fields under discussion. Each discussion will provide a general review as well as state-of-the-art updates on the topic. There will be time provided for questions from the audience. The topic for this year's series is cancer, a word that strikes fear and anxiety in everyone. Cancer treatment is a war between the cancer trying to spread and the doctor trying to stop it from overtaking the patient. Fortunately, there have been remarkable advances in the field of oncology. We are witnessing a revolution in cancer care that is allowing patients to live longer, healthier, and even experience cures from previously fatal cancer. The 2025 Andrew Wilk Medical Library Lectures will address cancer in a four-part series each being 90 minutes. *** On June 3, Dr. Lisa Phuong, a board-certified medical oncologist at Nuvance Health, and Dr. Jeanne Capasse, a board-certified breast surgeon specializing in breast cancer at Nuvance Health, will discuss the exciting progress in the diagnostics and therapeutics of breast cancer. Dr. Phuong will discuss the medical aspects of breast cancer care Dr. Capasse will focus on surgical approaches and reconstructive surgery of patients with breast cancer. About Lisa Phuong Dr. Lisa Phuong is a medical oncologist who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer. She completed her internal medicine residency at the University of Connecticut, and her hematology/oncology fellowship at Montefiore Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine in Bronx, NY. Dr. Phuong incorporates evidence-based medicine, clinical research, and compassionate care into her daily practice at the Whittingham Cancer Center in Norwalk. She helps patients understand the biology of their disease, as well as treatment options based on the most recent research developments and clinical studies. She also believes it is important to address patient challenges, including treatment-related side effects, financial concerns, and the psychological and emotional impact of being diagnosed with cancer. Dr. Phuong is the principal investigator of several clinical trials investigating new drugs, including targeted therapies and immunotherapies for breast cancer. She has had several peer-reviewed articles and abstracts published, as well as poster presentations at national cancer conferences. Dr. Phuong is an active member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology. About Jeanne Capasse Jeanne Capasse, MD, FACS, is a surgeon specializing in breast diseases and a medical director of the Smilow Family Breast Health Center in Norwalk. A native Westporter, Dr. Capasse received her bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering at Cornell University, followed by her medical degree at Weill Cornell in New York. She has been in practice in Norwalk for 30 years. In addition to caring for and educating patients regarding breast health issues, her passions include skiing, crossword puzzles, travel, and spending time with family. About Robert Altbaum Dr Robert Altbaum is a recently retired physician who practiced as an Internist in Westport for 40 years. He graduated from New York University, followed by Harvard Medical School, and completed his residency at Massachusetts General Hospital and Yale University. He is board certified in Internal Medicine and Geriatrics. For the past 40 years, he has enjoyed caring for the people of Fairfield County in the group practice, Internal Medicine Associates of Westport. He has been awarded Fairfield County and Connecticut’s Top Doctor award for 24 consecutive years. Currently retired, he continues to teach medical residents at Norwalk Hospital and coordinates the Andrew Wilk Westport Library Medical Series. *** Other events in this series: On Tuesday, April 22, Dr. Richard Frank, system chief for clinical and translational cancer research at Nuvance Health, explored the amazing advances in cancer including chemotherapy, targeted DNA treatment, and immunotherapy that have transformed the cancer treatment landscape. Artist Reception for ‘Interiors: A Look Inside’ and the Reveal of ‘Piece by Piece’ with The Artists Collective of Westport

Join us for a reception for The Artists Collective of Westport’s summer exhibit at The Westport Library, Interiors: A Look Inside, in the Sheffer Gallery and South Gallery, and as the Collective reveals its Piece by Piece installation in the Jesup Gallery. For Interiors, each of the Artists Collective members were invited to display a work in the medium of their choice that explores what “interiors” means to them. Contributors this year include Bonnie Edelman, Lynn Carlson, Peggy Dembicer, and Ros Shaffer, as well as Norm Siegel, Suzanne Benton, Julie Leff, Diane Pollack, Miggs Burroughs, Kat Evans, Niki Ketchman, and more. Piece by Piece is a 6-foot by 8-foot art installation composed of the work of 48 Artists Collective members. Each artist received a 12-inch by 12-inch blank panel along with a 12-inch square section randomly selected from a well-known modern painting. The artists created their individual piece, replicating a part of the larger painting in their own style, without knowing what the final painting will look like until it is revealed at the opening reception. Each 12-inch by 12-inch “piece” of Piece by Piece will be available for purchase starting the night of the reception. Each square will be $100, with 50% of the proceeds supporting the Library’s art programs and 50% going to the artist. The additional artworks on display in the Sheffer and South Galleries will also be available for purchase, with a percentage of the proceeds also going to benefit the Library’s art programming. Additional exhibit support is provided by The Drew Friedman Community Arts Center. The Artists Collective of Westport is a nonprofit organization composed of 150 local artists who have joined forces to discuss, create, and develop dynamic experiences for the Fairfield County community. The collective is open to all active artists in pursuit of expanding their careers and in developing a strong, diverse arts community. *** For more about the Library art exhibits, visit the Art at the Library page.
