Join a ranger for a guided hike to Fort DeRussy, a Civil War site in Washington, DC. As you walk through the wooded landscape of Rock Creek Park, you’ll uncover how this fort helped protect the nation’s capital during a time of conflict. Along the way, learn about the soldiers who lived and worked here and the challenges they faced while stationed in the field. At the fort, explore the earthworks that still stand today and imagine what life was like inside this military post. Rangers will share stories of daily routines, military strategy, and the experiences of those who served here. This hike offers a chance to experience history where it happened while connecting with the natural landscape that surrounds it. This program begins at the Rock Creek Park Nature Center.

Many people may not be aware that Meridian Hill park was actually once an encampment site for Civil War soldiers because it is a hill that offered soldiers an expansive view of the City of Washington which during the war was only a portion of the District of Columbia.  Come and learn about the soldiers who were here including Private Robert Gould Shaw later commanding officer of one of the first Black regiments of the Civil War the 77th New York Infantry who returened to the city in 1864 to fight in the battle of Fort Stevens and the 1st United States Colored Infantry who came to Meridian Hil before mustering out of service at the White House.
