A Matter of Balance is an award-winning program designed to help people learn practical strategies to manage falls and increase physical activity levels.Participants will learn:- view falls as controllable- set goals for increasing activity- make changes to reduce fall risks at home- exercise to increase strength and balanceWho should attend?- anyone concerned about falls- anyone interested in improving balance, flexibility and strength- anyone who has fallen in the past- anyone who has restricted activities because of falling concernsThis is an 8-week class led by Kelly Ward, Florida Dept. of Health Sarasota County.Registration is required and limited to 16 participants. Participants MUST attend 5 of 8 classes to graduate.

However, there's a positive story of two local species, the coontie plant (Zamia integrifolia) and the Atala butterfly (Eumaeus atala), that have rebounded from the brink of extinction thanks to improved human behavior and practices.The coontie plant, historically utilized by Florida's indigenous people, was driven close to extinction due to European settlers' commercial exploitation. It has now rebounded as a staple in Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ practices.
