Are you interested in Birding by Boat but don’t have a boat?  Our Field Trip Coordinator, Bob Lewis, has arranged a Bay Birding Pop Up on August 20th.  He needs 10 committed and paying participants at $30 each; cash on the barrel head guaranteed by 17 August.  That's for a morning rental, 8:00 till noon.  Then, based on the weather forecast he will confirm with the Twin Rivers Marina the next day to rent a pontoon for that date. At this point there's no turning back.  The Captain will point out hot spots as we cruise downriver toward Shell Island. The summer trip to the Lower Suwannee Nature Drive introduced members to a new birding route, as well as the sighting of a Blue Grosbeak to add to their list. The North side of the river takes us to the actual town of Suwannee at the end of state highway 349. It features the middle loop trail, for those who want to come a day early, and the Dixie Mainline Trail which heads north for 9 miles towards Perry. This is a more adventures trip, so an overnight stay is recommended. We would then drive the Dixie on Wednesday the 8th. SweetwaterWetlands Park is not only a place to connect with nature, it's a way to protectour environment. The park, which consists of more than 125 acres of wetlandsand ponds, was created to improve the water quality of wetlands in PaynesPrairie and the Floridan Aquifer. The walk will last about 3 hours. Now a thriving habitat, Sweetwater Wetlands Park is filled withvast numbers of plants and animals, including birds, butterflies, alligatorsand Florida Cracker horses. At the park, you can walk more than 3.5 miles of crushed graveltrails and boardwalks, experience the lush landscape from viewing platforms,and learn about the habitat through educational signs and tours. The entrance is just about 3/4 mile past intersection of 441 onright. Watch for the entrance sign. There is a $5 per car entry fee.
