Friday, May 16, 5:30-9pm, Art in the Form of Film Sponsors: Chase’s on the Beach – Where It’s Always Sunny and La Terraza Mexican Grille  Craig Gillespie’s 2023 comic bio-pic Dumb Money dramatizes the meteoric rise of the meme stock, GameStop, by Keith Gill (Paul Dano), an Everyman Boston-area financial analyst who opines on stocks in his spare time under the YouTube name Roaring Kitty. Through a retail trading technique known as short squeezing, he and his online followers drive GameStop’s stock price way up, causing massive losses by rich traders and hedge fund investors who are shorting the stock, essentially buying a derivative of sorts whose stock price is reverse correlated with GameStop’s. “Dumb money” is a pejorative given to retail traders by stock market elites. The cast includes Pete Davidson, hilarious as Keith’s brother, Shailene Woodley as Keith’s wife, and Vincent D’Onofrio, Nick Offerman and Seth Rogan as Wall Street elites. America Ferrera, who plays Jenny, one of Keith’s YouTube followers, won a Critics Choice Award for her performance. Instructor Paul Marino will introduce the film, raise questions to ponder and host a post-viewing discussion. These middle- and high-school students learn the basics of fashion design, color, fabrics, sewing, and the business of fashion. The Friends are played amazingly by actors with intellectual disabilities, notably Madison Devlin as Cosentino, Bradley Edens as Showtime, James Day Keith as Benny, and Kevin Iannucci. Kaitlin Olson of âItâs Always Sunny in Philadelphiaâ plays Alex, an actress who is Johnnyâs loving & protecting sister.
