She holds a doctorate in Contemporary Italian and Comparative Literature from the University of Florence, where her published dissertation examined the poetry of Nobel Laureate Eugenio Montale. She has taught Italian Language and Literature at several US universities and lectures widely on Classical and Renaissance subjects.

An intense spiritual and intellectual relationship blossomed between the unlikely pair as they exchanged letters, sonnets, and drawings for nearly a decade until Colonna’s death in 1547. She is the author of Michelangelo’s Art of Devotion in the Age of Reform, which was published by Cambridge University Press in 2023. She has also published articles on various aspects of Michelangelo’s life and career, from the Pietà to the artist’s portrait medal. Currently, she is researching and writing her second book on Michelangelo’s images of women.
