Loyal to King and Country: The Story of Georgia Loyalists in the War for Independence - Loyalists, colonists in the Thirteen Colonies of British America who remained loyal to the British government, could be found in all of the newly declared independent States, making up 20% of the total population. They were especially numerous in the Southern Colonies/States, specifically in Georgia - the only colony to see British governance fully restored. Using Museum Theatre Performances drawing from the stories of three Georgia Loyalists - John Hopkins and Elizabeth Johnston of Savannah and British Freedom (a formerly enslaved African-American) of Augusta - this program explores the experiences and decisions of these Georgians in the midst of a war which had an unpredictable end.

When you think of classical music, do the names Bach, Mozart, or Beethoven come to mind? What about Bologne, Price, or Still? Join us this Black History Month for an educational short series and learn about some of the many composers of African descent who have existed throughout history!Each program in this series will feature two composers:Dubbed "the Black Mozart", Joseph Bologne was born on a French plantation in Guadeloupe and taken to Paris for his formal education at the age of 7. He excelled in fencing, dancing, music, and composition. He was also a free man of color with many important friends such as Marie Antoinette.Thomas "Blind Tom" Wiggins was a Georgia native. Born blind on a plantation in Harris County, GA, he heard the daughters of the plantation owner playing piano and was able to learn by ear. By age 5 he had composed his first original piece!

Conner Vlietstra is an Oldtime Country musician from Chattanooga, Tennessee with a family from the Mississippi Delta. He began playing Country Blues music on the guitar at the age of 14 and began playing Country music shortly after with the inheritance of his grandfatherâs (Papaâs) banjo.Conner's progression as a multi-instrumentalist and vocalist is fueled by the influence of artists such as Furry Lewis, Uncle Dave Macon, and the Louvin Brothers.This is a monthly concert series sponsored by the Friends of the Library
