Join the National Park Service and enjoy summer wildflowers wildlife and learn more of the area’s natural and cultural history. This is a leisurely hike along this fairly level trail which passes by several types of important river bottomland wetlands and returns along the river. The wetlands attract more birds and a greater diversity of birds than other habitats. However with several types of habitats converging along this trail it is a great pace for wildlife in general. This area is a designated National Wildlife Viewing Area. It’s hard to imagine this area under cultivation. Yet that was the casefor perhaps centuries. In the late 19 th century and early twentieth century the Powers Family and then J.C. Hyde and his family cultivated corn in the narrow river floodplain where today we view mostly the marvels of nature. Location: Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area Johnson Ferry North Unit we will meet in the lower gravel parking area 301 Johnson Ferry Road Marietta Georgia 30068.Facilities: Located next to the NOC pavilionDifficulty: This hike will be leisurely. Note: This walk is not suitable for very young children.Bring: Dress for the weather bring a hat and wear shoes suitable for a forest trail. Bring water and snacks binoculars or a hand lens if you wish.

Join official park Friends group Chattahoochee National Park Conservancy for a guided paddle series in partnership with Nantahala Outdoor Center (NOC)! Whether you’re a seasoned paddler or brand new to the river this is your chance to experience the beauty of the Chattahoochee from a whole new perspective. Each trip highlights a different stretch of the river from peaceful flatwater floats to gentle rapids—all led by expert NOC guides.This is a lively stretch featuring near the northernmost stretch of the park (5 miles).What's Included: Kayak or ducky (inflatable kayak) paddle & life jacketGuided trip with NOC expertsSafety instruction and river interpretation  Note: This paddle will proceed rain or shine. However it will be canceled if river flows exceed 5 000 CFS if E. coli levels are high or in the event of lightning. Participants will be notified via phone in the event of cancellation.This program is in partnership with Nantahala Outdoor Center (NOC) and all participants must complete NOC's waiver prior to program start. Join the National Park Service for a walk through time as you stroll through the mature oak-hickory forest down the ridge to the scenic beauty of Sope Creek. Cross over the bridge and into the nineteenth century to discover the stories behind the massive stone ruins of the once bustling Marietta Paper Manufacturing Company. Discover what it was like to work in the mills the process of making paper and more. Learn about the uses of plants along the trail as medicine dyes and more. The mysteries of the mills will be revealed as you walk through time from 1855 to1903. The remaining stone walls of the mill ruins have seen much and have many stories to tell. Learn these wonderful stories fact fable and downright lie as you stroll along Sope Creek. Who was Chief Sope what tragedy befell poor Johnny Dickerson why did the mills close and what occurred during July 1864?
