Join the National Park Service Environment for the Americas and Birds Georgia for a guided bird walk in celebration of World Bird Migratory Day. Whether you are an experienced birder or you are trying something new we welcome you on the trail with us. We will provide binoculars and a basic orientation to bird-watching. Our walk will take us through wetlands open forested areas and along the river providing for a diversity of habitats in which to spot some of the 190+ species of birds found in Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area. After the group bird walk feel free to drop in on our educational activities table at the “Sparrow Field ” where we’ll have games bird specimens and information on how to support birds in the park and at home.Location:  We will meet at the start of the gravel path from the Cochran Shoals-Interstate North parking lot.Facilities: Restrooms and water fountain at the Interstate North Parking LotDifficulty: Easy mostly flatBring:  Bring water. Dress for the weather and wear shoes suitable for a forest trail. Bring binoculars and a bird book if you’d like we will have some also.

Join National Park Service Ranger Jerry Hightower for a summer afternoon walk in search of wildflowers, ferns, and signs of wildlife. Enjoy the beautiful forest, grand vistas of Thornton and Devil’s Race Course Shoals, and the dramatic palisades.  This is an extraordinarily scenic area with the steep cliffs of Devil’s Stair Steps rising from the waters of the Narrows at Diving Rock Beach.  We will proceed up river to Sandy Point before beginning our return.  This is a great opportunity to maybe see a Great Blue Heron take wing, spot a salamander, or see the prints of previous night’s wildlife in the mud. Please join us for this walk through an area of fantastic beauty.Facilities: Located at Devil’s Stair Step three quarters of the way thought the hikeDifficulty: Moderately strenuous with a steep ¼ mile return to the parking areaBring: Dress for the weather, bring a hat, and wear shoes suitable for a forest trail. Join the National Park Service and enjoy summer wildflowers, wildlife, and learn more of the area’s natural and cultural history.  This is a leisurely hike along this fairly level trail, which passes by several types of important river bottomland wetlands and returns along the river.  The wetlands attract more birds and a greater diversity of birds than other habitats. However, with several types of habitats converging along this trail, it is a great pace for wildlife in general. This area is a designated National Wildlife Viewing Area.  It’s hard to imagine this area under cultivation.  Yet that was the case for perhaps centuries.  In the late 19th century and early twentieth century the Powers Family and then J.C. Hyde and his family cultivated corn in the narrow river floodplain where today we view mostly the marvels of nature. Facilities: Located next to the NOC pavilion Difficulty: This hike will be leisurely. Note: This walk is not suitable for very young children.                                                                                                                                              Bring: Dress for the weather, bring a hat, and wear shoes suitable for a forest trail. Bring water and snacks, binoculars, or a hand lens if you wish.

Led by experienced instructor Keon Roebuck, this outdoor practice is open to all levels—whether you're a seasoned yogi or just starting out. Embrace the peaceful energy of nature as you stretch, breathe, and move with intention. Please bring your own yoga mat along with water and an open mind for a refreshing start to the day. Paddle the Park Series: Garrard Landing to Don WhiteFriday June 27th9:00 AM launch (trip will take approximately 1.5-3 hours including shuttle and time on the water can vary depending on water levels and how much participants paddle) Join Chattahoochee National Park Conservancy (park Friends group) for a guided paddle series in partnership with Nantahala Outdoor Center (NOC)! Whether you’re a seasoned paddler or brand new to the river this is your chance to experience the beauty of the Chattahoochee from a whole new perspective. Each trip highlights a different stretch of the river from peaceful flatwater floats—all led by expert NOC guides. This is a calm beginner-friendly paddle through forested riverbanks and open water views (3 miles mostly flatwater). What's Included:Kayak or ducky (inflatable kayak) paddle & life jacketGuided trip with NOC expertsSafety instruction and river interpretation

Join the National Park Service for a leisurely hike along the river, across scenic Rottenwood Creek, and through the forest around Blood Rock Ridge.  This is a wonderful opportunity to view Great Blue Herons fishing, hear the call of the Belted Kingfisher, see signs of wildlife, and learn a bit of geology. Learn fascinating facts and a fable or two about the diverse and abundant wildlife. Enjoy great views of Long Island Shoals as you walk along the trails and learn the grim story of Lightning Rock.  Along the trail we will look for wildlife signs.  Want to know why Blood Rock Ridge is called Blood Rock Ridge? Join us and find out.Facilities: Restrooms and water at parking area Difficulty:  Moderately easy with a 100 meter steep section and climb over uneven rocks at Lightning Rock.  These walks are slow with numerous stops to discuss items of interest along the way.
