As elements of General Sherman’s Union Army of the Tennessee entered the Tennessee Valley on November 15, they soon learned of their pivotal role in the coming engagement. They were to cross the Tennessee River, not once, but twice, eventually making their way to the north end of Missionary Ridge. Major Henry S. Dean, 22nd Michigan Volunteer Infantry, wrote “An experienced engineer could not have constructed a better place for throwing up a bridge in the face of opposition…” Come learn more about this crucial aspect of General Ulysses S. Grant’s plan for driving General Braxton Bragg and Confederates from Missionary Ridge and Chattanooga. This program is brought to you without a fee and is supported by the National Park Partners and the Friends of Outdoor Chattanooga. The following reservation and paddler requirements must be met prior to tour participation. Outdoor Chattanooga and the National Park Service reserve the right to cancel a trip at any time at their discretion, due to weather or water conditions. Participants will be notified as soon as possible if there is a cancellation. If you must cancel your reservation for any reason, please try to do so with a minimum of 24 hours’ notice, as the wait list does get full.
