In a year of anniversaries, what better way to celebrate the Garden’s 50th than an encore exhibition of artist Niki de Saint Phalle’s monumental sculptures that debuted at the Garden 20 years ago this spring. The French sculptor, who died in 2002, was known as one of the first female sculptors of massive works, particularly her “Nanas” – light-hearted, whimsical and colorful large-scale sculptures of females, animals and monsters. This year’s exhibition, presented May 9 – September 6, will feature 41 works in what’s believed to be the largest showing of the artist’s art ever presented in North America. Most will be on loan from the Niki Charitable Art Foundation and others from private collections. “Those who saw the 2006 exhibit are going to relish experiencing these fun, joyful sculptures again, and those who didn’t are in for a major treat!” said Garden President & CEO Mary Pat Matheson. The often-playful, extremely colorful sculptures range from Grand Step Totem, weighing in at 2,000 pounds, and the Large Yelling Man, towering as 16.5 feet, to small wall hangings of reliefs measuring 2 feet square. The most iconic of the pieces – all displayed throughout the Garden as well as Conservatory, Orchid Center and Gardenhouse Gallery – will be The Three Graces frolicking in the Skyline Garden pond. In addition, an interpretive exhibit on the artist and her work will be on display near the entrance to the Orchid Display House.

Saturdays at 10 a.m.: Drop by the Fuqua Conservatory lobby to watch the frogs jump into action when presented with their meals. An amphibian specialist will share fun facts and answer questions about these captivating creatures. Public frog feedings allow visitors to observe one of the most interesting aspects of these amphibians – their feeding behaviors. Most frogs have long sticky tongues that shoot out at prey. Some, like Poison frogs, are able to do this with such incredible speed and accuracy that all visitors notice are flies disappearing. Others, like the fringed leaf frog, are dramatic feeders that stuff the crickets into their mouths with their hands.

Celebrate National Haiku Poetry Day with us this April as we combine art with nature. Come learn how natural patterns create interesting textures and then mimic those textures in art. May: Mythical Creatures What magical creatures might you discover in Niki de Saint Phalle’s bold and playful sculptures? Venture with us into a fantastical world of mythical animals and imaginative forms inspired by her art. Visit the mermaids in our sensory bins, uncover hidden dragon treasure in kinetic sand, and create your own slithering snake at the art station. June: Pollinator Friends Celebrate National Pollinator Week with us this June. Learn about the valuable role of diverse pollinator species in our ecosystems, and investigate these fascinating critters up close. Join us for a bug tic-tac-toe game, dig your hands into our “bees in a hive” sensory bins and homemade scented playdough, and decorate a “bug rock” to take home!   July: Animal Adventures This July, Garden Playtime takes inspiration from the lively animal sculptures found in Niki de Saint Phalle’s artwork. Families are invited to dress up as animals, create a shared animal print mural, and design your own unique animal to take home. August: Wonderful Water From fountains to flowing forms, Niki de Saint Phalle’s art celebrates the joyful movement of water. Families can enjoy water sensory bins, water lily art, frog pond shaving cream exploration, and frog games on the Children’s Garden lawn. Be sure to cool down in the Splash Pad before you head home! September: Golden Grows In honor of the Garden’s 50th Anniversary, September’s Garden Playtime celebrates the golden colors found throughout the landscape. Families are invited to make sunflower art, scoop and pour in sunflower rice sensory bins, and paint with corn cobs at our mural station. October: Harvest Time This month’s activities are inspired by the harvest season. From delicious food aromas to the crunching sounds of leaves, relax into the nostalgia of autumn as we wind down Garden Playtime for the year. He broadened his skills at Gwinnett Technical College, which he credits with giving him a “solid grasp of the fundamentals.”  Upon graduation he focused his career in on fine dining, working his way up the kitchen ladder at some of Atlanta’s most-respected restaurants, including Canoe, Aria, and the nationally-acclaimed Gunshow. Chef Alan joined The Deer and the Dove in 2023, to work with chef/owner and James Beard award winner, Terry Koval. While Byer’s confesses he admired Chef Terry’s background as a skateboarder, it was his dedication to honest, family values and his food philosophy: the Deer and The Dove receives the highest rating of any Atlanta restaurant when it comes to sourcing food from local, family farms.   In addition, the restaurant’s approach to authentic cooking – featuring a wood burning hearth – was exactly the rustic style of cuisine that Chef Alan knew he could excel with. And excel he did, being named Chef d’ Cuisine of The Deer and The Dove in 2024.     In his role as Chef d’ Cuisine at The Deer and The Dove,  Alan supports a number of community and charitable organizations, including: The Giving Kitchen, Georgia Organics, Slow Food  Atlanta, Global Growers Wholesome Wave and Les Dames d’ Escoffier.
