Introduce your little one to the joys of nature! Join us for fun activities that will stimulate your child’s interest in the natural world. With a new theme each month and activities that engage the senses and spark creativity, Garden Playtime is an enjoyable and enriching activity for families throughout the spring, summer and fall. Dates: Tuesdays, March – Oct.Time: 10 a.m. – noonFree with Garden admission Suggested ages: 6 months – 5 years. Weather permitting. We will cancel if rain or inclement weather makes outdoor programming impractical. To check the status, email [email protected]. March: What’s the Weather? Kick off a new season of Garden Playtime with us as we explore the wonder of weather. Visit the art station to make your own rain stick and play a weather matching game at our kinetic sand tables! Be sure to swing by our rainbow sensory bins to bring in the sunshine.  April: Art in Nature Celebrate National Haiku Poetry Day with us this April as we combine art with nature. Come learn how natural patterns create interesting textures and then mimic those textures in art. Explore forest scenes in our sensory bins, combine natural items with playdough at our playdough tables, and create your own nature bookmark to take home. May: Enchant Your Senses What magic will Patrick Shearn’s Enchanted Trees bring to the Garden this May? Come find out as we adventure into the sounds and colors of the world around us. Explore the wonder of light in the Amphitheatre, look for hidden friends in our fairy garden sensory bins, and design your own wind chime to take home.   June: Pollinator Friends Celebrate National Pollinator Week with us this June. Learn about the valuable role of diverse pollinator species in our ecosystems, and investigate these fascinating critters up close. Join us for a bug tic-tac-toe game, dig your hands into our “bees in a hive” sensory bins and honey slime, and design your own beehive using bubble wrap! July: Kids in Wonderland Alice’s Wonderland returns for another season of fun, with beautiful mosaiculture sculptures placed throughout the Garden. Find the giant rabbit and other interesting sculptures, and then let your imagination go wild in the Children’s Garden at our tea party sensory station and flamingo croquet. Be sure to visit our art station to paint red roses using celery pieces!  August: Froggy Fun Dive into the wonderful world of frogs! From our frog lawn games, to our frog pond sensory bins and playdough station, to our frog feet sponge paintings, you’re sure to have a hoppin’ good time! Be sure to cool down in the Splash Pad before you head home. September: Enchanted Trees The joy of Patrick Shearn’s Enchanted Trees continues in the Children’s Garden as we explore the wonder of trees. Join us for leaf rubbings and a pinecone painting mural, sink your hands into our apple pie themed sensory bins, and swing by the art station to make your own four-season tree to take home. October: Harvest Time This month’s activities are inspired by the harvest season. From delicious food aromas to the crunching sounds of leaves, relax into the nostalgia of autumn as we wind down Garden Playtime for the year. Save some time to hunt around for your favorite Scarecrows in the Garden.

Enjoy a variety of live performances by some of Atlanta’s most beloved children’s musicians and storytellers in this engaging series. Shows take place Fridays, May through September at 10 and 10:45 a.m.   Jim Sawgrass is a native Floridian of Muscogee Creek (Mvskoke) descent and living historian of the southeastern tribes of Florida, Georgia, and Alabama. He served on the Florida Indian Council from 1991-1995 and has been sharing his knowledge of the Southeastern Native American tribes for over 30 years. Follow Alice down the rabbit hole as a new story of larger-than-life plants blooms in Atlanta’s Urban Oasis. Alice’s Wonderland features 38 larger-than-life sculptures in seven installations inspired by Lewis Carroll’s timeless tales, plus Shaggy Dog and the now-iconic Earth Goddess, two pieces in the Garden’s permanent collection from the 2013-14 exhibitions Imaginary Worlds: Plants Larger Than Life and A New Kingdom of Plant Giants. Let imagination be your guide as you enter the Garden through giant Storybooks. Sneak past the grinning Cheshire Cat looking on as you discover Alice spinning in a whirl of teacups and playing cards. Enchanted Trees by Poetic Kinetics marks the return of the artists behind the Garden’s 2021 exhibition of a signature rainbow-hued “Skynet” billowing above the Canopy Walk. The 10 sculptures will be scattered throughout the Garden, drawing onlookers with their dazzling acrylic leaves. Standing from 10 to 17 feet tall, the trees cast dappled light and reflective, shifting colors on everything around them. This exhibition is created by Poetic Kinetics and produced by Elemental Exhibitions.

Saturdays at 10 a.m.: Drop by the Fuqua Conservatory lobby to watch the frogs jump into action when presented with their meals. An amphibian specialist will share fun facts and answer questions about these captivating creatures. Public frog feedings allow visitors to observe one of the most interesting aspects of these amphibians – their feeding behaviors. Most frogs have long sticky tongues that shoot out at prey. Some, like Poison frogs, are able to do this with such incredible speed and accuracy that all visitors notice are flies disappearing. Others, like the fringed leaf frog, are dramatic feeders that stuff the crickets into their mouths with their hands.

Every meal was an education, not in terms of the family recipes, but also the accompanying stories of his ancestors. “Food really became something that helped me make connections, especially with my heritage. It also connects us with a sense of place… where we’ve come from and where we are in the present moment.”  While some young chefs dream of rocketing to fame with a cable TV show, Chef Karl was content to put in the hard work and learn everything he could from the best restaurants in the region. His first serious kitchen job was offered to him in the closest big city, Jackson, MS. The restaurant, named Bravo, had earned a time-tested reputation for classic Italian cuisine and fine wine. It was the perfect place to translate his youthful passion into professional skills, starting with the most basic. Karl’s natural talent, combined with his work ethic, propelled him from one kitchen position to another and in a few short years he was named Sous Chef.  Although still in his twenties, Karl was ready for a bigger challenge, which came in the form of the famed Restaurant August, the flagship of the legendary John Besh Restaurant Group in New Orleans, LA. The restaurant and the city served as Karl’s introduction to true fine dining and he never looked back. At August, Chef Karl absorbed everything he could, while rising to the level of Chef de Tournant. “I am forever grateful for my time at August. Everything we did was measured by the highest standards. It’s where I learned that, rather than competing with other young chefs, my success would come from being better than I was yesterday. I believe that to this day.”  Karl’s next stop was Atlanta, where he continued his education in the city’s finest kitchens the famed Watershed Restaurant, and the now Michelin Star-minted Atlas, at The St. Regis Hotel.  After 2 post-COVID years consulting for a number of Atlanta restaurant groups, it was Karl’s desire to build his own business –  and honor his own food heritage – that led him to create Avize Modern Alpine Kitchen in Atlanta’s West Midtown. Here Karl explores the unique blend of cultures and flavors that make up the European Alps region. These are expressed through carefully cultivated ingredients delivered fresh daily from the restaurant’s farm south of Atlanta. Karl looks forward to welcoming guests into Avize as he would his own home.
