Spending summers growing up in South Carolina with his grandmother Harriet, he attributes his love for fresh vegetables & thoughtful care for his cuisine to her and his memories of picking vegetables from her garden, bringing them straight to the kitchen to make meals alongside her. When his family moved to the Roswell area, Robert started his professional career working in local restaurants. He spent time with excellent company and learning from staple names in the Atlanta restaurant scene, like Araxi & Todd Annis, Deux Plex & Hector Santiago, plus a number of Concentrics Hospitality Restaurants with Bob Amick & Todd Rushing. In the early 2000s, he started looking for something a bit different and that he could spend the rest of his time learning, honing the quality & making his own – ultimately finding himself immersed in all things barbecue, thanks to a reconnection with the beloved (and dearly missed) Dave Roberts of Sam’s BBQ-1. In 2011, he opened Grand Champion BBQ and grew to 5 stores by 2015. Earning accolades for its mac and cheese + brisket and ribs from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and named “Best Runner-Up BBQ” by Atlanta magazine, Robert eventually wanted to redirect his focus to the highest quality meats, woods, smokers and fresh sides – paring down the Grand Champion menu to perfect the best of the basics. He now operates Owens & Hull out of Grand Champion’s location in Smyrna, where he blends Texas & Carolina styles of BBQ to create his own Georgia brand – focusing on curating the highest quality ingredients to smoke and serve, with a rotating menu of fresh & creative sides. Since opening, Owens & Hull landed on Eater Atlanta’s “Hottest New Restaurants” list for several months in a row, and was named to Southern Living’s “Top 20 Hottest BBQ Restaurants in the South,” alongside features in Texas Monthly and earning writer Daniel Vaughn’s third spot in his list of BBQ destinations around the U.S. in 2024. Robert has over 25 years of experience in the hospitality industry, with 15 of them specific to BBQ. He resides in the Atlanta area and enjoys F1 racing in the time he’s not tending to the smoker.

That still did not stop his passion to pursue a culinary career. Chef Butts graduated from Johnson C. He became a rising star at the university which included receiving the first-time title for the university, “Mr. Johnson C. Caldwell’s official culinary journey started at the age of 15 working at a Popeyes in downtown New Orleans – quickly adapting to the lively restaurant environment, especially throughout Mardi Gras with the frenzy of parades passing by – but, before that, soaked in his hometown heritage in his grandmother’s kitchen. After graduating from the Culinary Institute of New Orleans in 2001, Caldwell launched his career in fine dining at Pascal’s Manale, known for its Italian-Creole cuisine. About Chef Max Hines Executive Chef of Eater’s 38 Essential Atlanta Restaurants Breaker Breaker, Maximilian Hines was a Rising Star Chef 2022, and won Atlanta magazines best pop up 2023 with his pop up Stolen Goods. Hines’s personal project, Stolen Goods, hosts pop-up events which feature ‘irreverent’ interpretations of well-known dishes. The project focuses on intersections of world cuisines, with particular attention paid to the impact of the African Diaspora on food cultures. Stolen Goods works to shed light on the stories of Black cooks—past and present—and to create opportunities for Black industry professionals. About Chef Demetrius Brown Demetrius Brown discovered his love for food at an early age, inspired by his late great-grandmother’s cooking. Born into a Trinidadian and Jamaican family and raised in Providence, Rhode Island and Atlanta, Georgia, Demetrius started cooking for his family at the age of five. He grew up surrounded by diverse cultures and found that the restaurant landscape he encountered was disconnected from the cuisine and dishes he wanted to create – a frustration that ultimately led him down a path to explore his heritage. Brown’s gastronomic passion was kindled during his teenage years when his grandfather introduced him to one of the premier culinary schools in the U.S., Johnson & Wales University, during a trip to Providence. Despite initial expectations to follow in his family’s footsteps in the automotive industry, Brown decided to pursue his passion for cooking, enrolling at Johnson & Wales. After graduation, he returned to Atlanta, carrying with him a burgeoning desire to delve into the exploration of Caribbean and Afro-American cuisine. Following time working at some of the finest restaurants in Atlanta and The Hill at Serenbe in Chattahoochee Hills, Brown’s professional career continued to blossom as he took on the role of executive chef at The Pinewood in Decatur, Georgia, where his innovative approach earned him an Eater “Young Guns” nomination in 2020. The next year, in the midst of the pandemic, Brown launched Heritage Supper Club. Through the project, Brown shared the rich traditions of Caribbean and Afro-American cuisines, and earned the title of “Best Food Pop-Up” from Atlanta Magazine in 2021. His quest to celebrate the cuisine of the African diaspora advanced with his acquisition of Bread & Butterfly – Atlanta’s Parisian daytime café in Inman Park – in August 2023, following a successful Heritage Supper Club pop-up event at the restaurant under its former owner and chef Billy Allin. Paying homage to Bread & Butterfly’s roots, Demetrius has evolved many beloved breakfast and lunch dishes on the menu while thoughtfully weaving in his signature culinary style and building upon his strong relationships with small, local farms. As part of the restaurant’s next chapter, Brown opened the restaurant for dinner, featuring a new menu serving French cuisine as seen through the lens of the African diaspora, particularly Caribbean cuisine. Brown aims to educate patrons about the origin and evolution of these dishes while making them approachable to a broad audience. Since its debut, Bread & Butterfly has been named to The New York Times’ America’s Best Restaurants in 2024 and The 25 Best Restaurants in Atlanta list in 2024 and 2025. When she was six, her family immigrated to the United States. The new country felt unfamiliar at first but she slowly adjusted into the diverse community over time. Her parents would garden growing up and provide fresh food for the family. As she grew older, she joined Jolly Avenue Garden, a community space where people from many backgrounds grew their own food and shared their stories. She loved learning from other gardeners and seeing how gardening could bring people together. Inspired by her family and her time in the garden, Sela decided to study horticulture and is now starting her own garden at home. Ja Jyu Lon Ko Two Fish Myanmar serves authentic Burmese dishes. The menu attracts customers seeking traditional comfort food from Myanmar, as well as new customers experiencing the cuisine for the first time. Owners Yapar and Ja Jyu Lon Ko, resettled in the United States in 2015. After years of running the business part-time from their home, the family decided to launch their homestyle cooking into a full time business in spring of 2024. The name of the business comes from the story of Jesus taking five loaves and two fish, multiplying them to feed a crowd. Karim + Miriam Alrubaii Al Chef is a family-owned Mediterranean restaurant located in the Clarkston Market in Clarkston, Georgia, serving the diverse communities of the greater Atlanta area. The business is rooted in the story of husband and wife Karim and Siham. The head chef, Karim Alrubaii, was born in Basra, Iraq, and the owner/sous-chef, Siham Suleiman, was born in Ayn Al-Shams, Syria. Both fled to Lebanon before eventually immigrating to the U.S. Like many immigrants, food became their bridge to culture and home. Karim spent over 30 years in kitchens before coming to the U.S., he built a restaurant on a ship that used to import supplies to Iraq. After immigrating, Karim cooked at the Hyatt Regency in Atlanta for 14 years until their daughter, Miriam Alrubaii, made his dream come true. While earning her degree in Human Resource Management, Miriam founded the business, Al Chef, as an LLC with her mom, Siham. After graduating from Oglethorpe University in May 2025, Miriam took over daily operations while Siham, half-owner and cook, worked alongside Karim. Now, Miriam has handed the daily operations to her brothers, Sharball and Yousif Alrubaii. Since opening in March 2024, Al Chef’s mission is to serve authentic Mediterranean food that reminds refugees and immigrants of home while welcoming all cultures to enjoy traditional Middle Eastern cuisine. Ritha Mwida Ritha Mutombo Mwidya is a Congolese cook, theology student, and community advocate living in Atlanta, Georgia. Born and raised in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ritha carries the rich culinary traditions of Central Africa in her hands and heart. For her, cooking is more than preparing food it is storytelling, hospitality, and cultural preservation. Ritha is married and a proud mother of two. As a wife, mom, and Master of Divinity student at Columbia Theological Seminary, she balances family life, school, and community with deep faith and determination. She cares deeply about immigrant and refugee communities, especially women who may doubt their voice or calling. Ritha believes God gives each person gifts, and she hopes to encourage women, especially Congolese women, to believe in themselves and in the purpose God has placed in them. For Ritha, food is personal. When she prepares samoussas, beignets, or Pondu (yuca leaves), Ritha will be cooking the meals she grew up eating, meals that remind her of home, family gatherings, laughter, and strength. Sharing Congolese food is her way of sharing where she comes from and inviting others to feel welcome at the table. Through events like the Refugee Recipe Celebration, Ritha hopes not only to nourish people’s bodies but also to foster understanding, connection, and community around the table. Live Music and Dance Performances Watch West African dance, drum and sekere performances by Egun Omode, listen to music by the Clarkston Strings High School Small Group Orchestra, and watch Burmese dance performances. Discovery StationsStroll the Garden and visit discovery stations from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Talk with Friends of Refugees staff and the International Rescue Committee Youth Food Justice Interns to learn about the interesting work they do. She loved learning from other gardeners and seeing how gardening could bring people together. Inspired by her family and her time in the garden, Sela decided to study horticulture and is now starting her own garden at home. Ja Jyu Lon Ko Two Fish Myanmar serves authentic Burmese dishes. The menu attracts customers seeking traditional comfort food from Myanmar, as well as new customers experiencing the cuisine for the first time. Owners Yapar and Ja Jyu Lon Ko, resettled in the United States in 2015. After years of running the business part-time from their home, the family decided to launch their homestyle cooking into a full time business in spring of 2024. The name of the business comes from the story of Jesus taking five loaves and two fish, multiplying them to feed a crowd. Karim + Miriam Alrubaii Al Chef is a family-owned Mediterranean restaurant located in the Clarkston Market in Clarkston, Georgia, serving the diverse communities of the greater Atlanta area. The business is rooted in the story of husband and wife Karim and Siham. The head chef, Karim Alrubaii, was born in Basra, Iraq, and the owner/sous-chef, Siham Suleiman, was born in Ayn Al-Shams, Syria. Both fled to Lebanon before eventually immigrating to the U.S. Like many immigrants, food became their bridge to culture and home. Karim spent over 30 years in kitchens before coming to the U.S., he built a restaurant on a ship that used to import supplies to Iraq. After immigrating, Karim cooked at the Hyatt Regency in Atlanta for 14 years until their daughter, Miriam Alrubaii, made his dream come true. While earning her degree in Human Resource Management, Miriam founded the business, Al Chef, as an LLC with her mom, Siham. After graduating from Oglethorpe University in May 2025, Miriam took over daily operations while Siham, half-owner and cook, worked alongside Karim. Now, Miriam has handed the daily operations to her brothers, Sharball and Yousif Alrubaii. Since opening in March 2024, Al Chef’s mission is to serve authentic Mediterranean food that reminds refugees and immigrants of home while welcoming all cultures to enjoy traditional Middle Eastern cuisine. Ritha Mwida Ritha Mutombo Mwidya is a Congolese cook, theology student, and community advocate living in Atlanta, Georgia. Born and raised in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ritha carries the rich culinary traditions of Central Africa in her hands and heart. For her, cooking is more than preparing food it is storytelling, hospitality, and cultural preservation. Ritha is married and a proud mother of two. As a wife, mom, and Master of Divinity student at Columbia Theological Seminary, she balances family life, school, and community with deep faith and determination. She cares deeply about immigrant and refugee communities, especially women who may doubt their voice or calling. Ritha believes God gives each person gifts, and she hopes to encourage women, especially Congolese women, to believe in themselves and in the purpose God has placed in them. For Ritha, food is personal. When she prepares samoussas, beignets, or Pondu (yuca leaves), Ritha will be cooking the meals she grew up eating, meals that remind her of home, family gatherings, laughter, and strength. Sharing Congolese food is her way of sharing where she comes from and inviting others to feel welcome at the table. Through events like the Refugee Recipe Celebration, Ritha hopes not only to nourish people’s bodies but also to foster understanding, connection, and community around the table.

Celebrate National Haiku Poetry Day with us this April as we combine art with nature. Come learn how natural patterns create interesting textures and then mimic those textures in art. Explore forest scenes in our sensory bins, paint with natural items at our mural station, and create your own recycled art mosaic to take home. May: Mythical Creatures What magical creatures might you discover in Niki de Saint Phalle’s bold and playful sculptures? Venture with us into a fantastical world of mythical animals and imaginative forms inspired by her art. Visit the mermaids in our sensory bins, uncover hidden dragon treasure in kinetic sand, and create your own slithering snake at the art station. June: Pollinator Friends Celebrate National Pollinator Week with us this June. Learn about the valuable role of diverse pollinator species in our ecosystems, and investigate these fascinating critters up close. Join us for a bug tic-tac-toe game, dig your hands into our “bees in a hive” sensory bins and homemade scented playdough, and decorate a “bug rock” to take home! July: Animal Adventures This July, Garden Playtime takes inspiration from the lively animal sculptures found in Niki de Saint Phalle’s artwork. Families are invited to dress up as animals, create a shared animal print mural, and design your own unique animal to take home. August: Wonderful Water From fountains to flowing forms, Niki de Saint Phalle’s art celebrates the joyful movement of water. Families can enjoy water sensory bins, water lily art, frog pond shaving cream exploration, and frog games on the Children’s Garden lawn. Be sure to cool down in the Splash Pad before you head home! September: Golden Grows In honor of the Garden’s 50th Anniversary, September’s Garden Playtime celebrates the golden colors found throughout the landscape. Families are invited to make sunflower art, scoop and pour in sunflower rice sensory bins, and paint with corn cobs at our mural station. October: Harvest Time This month’s activities are inspired by the harvest season. From delicious food aromas to the crunching sounds of leaves, relax into the nostalgia of autumn as we wind down Garden Playtime for the year. Save some time to hunt around for your favorite Scarecrows in the Garden.
