Saturdays at 10 a.m.: Drop by the Fuqua Conservatory lobby to watch the frogs jump into action when presented with their meals. An amphibian specialist will share fun facts and answer questions about these captivating creatures. Public frog feedings allow visitors to observe one of the most interesting aspects of these amphibians – their feeding behaviors. Most frogs have long sticky tongues that shoot out at prey. Some, like Poison frogs, are able to do this with such incredible speed and accuracy that all visitors notice are flies disappearing. Others, like the fringed leaf frog, are dramatic feeders that stuff the crickets into their mouths with their hands.

With her eye for design, Jamie has created a catering experience that is both visually stunning and incredibly delicious (thanks to the culinary team). You will often find her working behind the scenes on operations while caring for their kiddos at home. About Jason Jimenez Jason started his career exposed to true Southern cuisine in Charleston, SC while attending culinary school at Johnson and Wales University. The Atlanta native returned home to Georgia to work at several of the acclaimed restaurants around town, including Canoe, Local Three, and Muss & Turner’s. Over the years, Jason developed a desire to bring exceptional seasonal menus to private events–whether celebrations, retreats, or company dinners. In September 2012, he started the Homespun with his wife, Jamie. With a passion for locally sourced foods, Jason has thoroughly enjoyed giving life to the idea of an intentional communal food experience. In 2016 Jason opened the neighborhood eatery, Kitchen Six, where he served as the operating partner and executive chef until the Fall of 2019, when he left the restaurant to focus on Homespun.

She has worked as a plant based cooking instructor for Dr. Jennifer Rooke’s 12-Week Lifestyle Intervention classes at Morehouse School of Medicine.  She actively promotes switching to minimally processed, nutritionally dense, plant based diets. May: Enchant Your Senses What magic will Patrick Shearn’s Enchanted Trees bring to the Garden this May? Come find out as we adventure into the sounds and colors of the world around us. Explore the wonder of light in the Amphitheatre, look for hidden friends in our fairy garden sensory bins, and design your own wind chime to take home.   June: Pollinator Friends Celebrate National Pollinator Week with us this June. Learn about the valuable role of diverse pollinator species in our ecosystems, and investigate these fascinating critters up close. Join us for a bug tic-tac-toe game, dig your hands into our “bees in a hive” sensory bins and honey slime, and design your own beehive using bubble wrap! July: Kids in Wonderland Alice’s Wonderland returns for another season of fun, with beautiful mosaiculture sculptures placed throughout the Garden. Find the giant rabbit and other interesting sculptures, and then let your imagination go wild in the Children’s Garden at our tea party sensory station and flamingo croquet. Be sure to visit our art station to paint red roses using celery pieces!  August: Froggy Fun Dive into the wonderful world of frogs! From our frog lawn games, to our frog pond sensory bins and playdough station, to our frog feet sponge paintings, you’re sure to have a hoppin’ good time! Be sure to cool down in the Splash Pad before you head home. September: Enchanted Trees The joy of Patrick Shearn’s Enchanted Trees continues in the Children’s Garden as we explore the wonder of trees. Join us for leaf rubbings and a pinecone painting mural, sink your hands into our apple pie themed sensory bins, and swing by the art station to make your own four-season tree to take home. October: Harvest Time This month’s activities are inspired by the harvest season. From delicious food aromas to the crunching sounds of leaves, relax into the nostalgia of autumn as we wind down Garden Playtime for the year. Fermentation is one of the oldest food processing methods still used today. Scientifically known as zymology, it converts carbohydrates into alcohols, carbon dioxide, yeast, or bacteria. Beer, miso, sourdough, kefir, kimchi, and many other delicious foods we love are the product of fermentation. Discover the basic science behind how to ferment vegetables– from sauerkraut and beets to carrots and corn– then enjoy appetizers as you discuss the many health benefits fermented foods can provide. Cheryl Paswater, Chief Fermentationist & CEO Cheryl Paswater is the Chief Fermentationist of Contraband Ferments and Functional Medicine Practitioner as well as an educator, health coach, sous chef, artist, and writer. She previously co-organized the NYC Ferments Meetup and NYC Fermentation Festival. She has been a contributing writer for Edible Magazine as well as a contributor to the book “Miso, Tempeh, Natto” and is currently working on her first book on fermentation. You can find her teaching workshops and speaking on fermentation and health at in person workshops, online classes, and at festivals both regionally and internationally. Amazing metro-Atlanta teachers are invited to join us for a complimentary summer evening planned just for them! Stroll through the Dorothy Chapman Fuqua Conservatory and Fuqua Orchid Center to see our world-class interpretations of tropical, desert, and high-elevation environments and marvel at the colorful diversity of plants found throughout our 30-acre urban oasis. Don’t miss the return of Alice’s Wonderland featuring seven installations of 22 topiary-like mosaiculture pieces, such as the Red Queen and the White Rabbit! Plus, Enchanted Trees by Poetic Kinetics marks the return of the artists behind the Garden’s 2021 exhibition of a signature rainbow-hued “Skynet” billowing above the Canopy Walk. Watch the Atlanta Shakespeare Company’s Theatre for the Very Young Performance of Tempest, Junior!, a 45-minute version of Shakespeare’s The Tempest performed by four charming and energetic professional actors and puppets at 6:30 p.m.! Audience engagement abounds in this delightful, abbreviated rendition of one of William Shakespeare’s most beloved comedies. Theatre for the Very Young productions are appropriate for Ages 4-7 and are available to book for live performances at local schools, camp programs and other venues in Spring/ Summer 2024. Listen to soprano Alexandra Watson, baritone Michael Ntwa, and a pianist from the Atlanta Opera perform a selection of opera classics along with fun musical theater surprises at 4:30 p.m. The Atlanta Opera serves over 70,000 students in the Metro Atlanta Area and throughout the state of Georgia every year and they seek to inspire creativity, stimulate critical conversations, promote an enduring appreciation of the arts, and create audiences for the future. Visit Storza Woods and experience the beauty of live music surrounded by nature as talented faculty members from Franklin Pond Chamber Music perform timeless string quartets by Mozart, Beethoven, and other classical greats at 6 p.m. Perfect for all ages, this interactive performance invites curiosity—musicians will chat with the audience and are happy to answer questions throughout the evening. Franklin Pond Chamber Music provides year-round instruction and mentorship for young musicians ages 10–18. Drinks and snacks will be available for purchase. Introduce your little one to the joys of nature! Join us for fun activities that will stimulate your child’s interest in the natural world. With a new theme each month and activities that engage the senses and spark creativity, Garden Playtime is an enjoyable and enriching activity for families throughout the spring, summer and fall. Dates: Tuesdays, March – Oct.Time: 10 a.m. – noonFree with Garden admission Suggested ages: 6 months – 5 years. Weather permitting. We will cancel if rain or inclement weather makes outdoor programming impractical. To check the status, email classes@atlantabg.org. March: What’s the Weather? Kick off a new season of Garden Playtime with us as we explore the wonder of weather. Visit the art station to make your own rain stick and play a weather matching game at our kinetic sand tables! Be sure to swing by our rainbow sensory bins to bring in the sunshine.  April: Art in Nature Celebrate National Haiku Poetry Day with us this April as we combine art with nature. Come learn how natural patterns create interesting textures and then mimic those textures in art. Explore forest scenes in our sensory bins, combine natural items with playdough at our playdough tables, and create your own nature bookmark to take home. May: Enchant Your Senses What magic will Patrick Shearn’s Enchanted Trees bring to the Garden this May? Come find out as we adventure into the sounds and colors of the world around us. Explore the wonder of light in the Amphitheatre, look for hidden friends in our fairy garden sensory bins, and design your own wind chime to take home.   June: Pollinator Friends Celebrate National Pollinator Week with us this June. Learn about the valuable role of diverse pollinator species in our ecosystems, and investigate these fascinating critters up close. Join us for a bug tic-tac-toe game, dig your hands into our “bees in a hive” sensory bins and honey slime, and design your own beehive using bubble wrap! July: Kids in Wonderland Alice’s Wonderland returns for another season of fun, with beautiful mosaiculture sculptures placed throughout the Garden. Find the giant rabbit and other interesting sculptures, and then let your imagination go wild in the Children’s Garden at our tea party sensory station and flamingo croquet. Be sure to visit our art station to paint red roses using celery pieces!  August: Froggy Fun Dive into the wonderful world of frogs! From our frog lawn games, to our frog pond sensory bins and playdough station, to our frog feet sponge paintings, you’re sure to have a hoppin’ good time! Be sure to cool down in the Splash Pad before you head home. September: Enchanted Trees The joy of Patrick Shearn’s Enchanted Trees continues in the Children’s Garden as we explore the wonder of trees. Join us for leaf rubbings and a pinecone painting mural, sink your hands into our apple pie themed sensory bins, and swing by the art station to make your own four-season tree to take home. October: Harvest Time This month’s activities are inspired by the harvest season. From delicious food aromas to the crunching sounds of leaves, relax into the nostalgia of autumn as we wind down Garden Playtime for the year. Schedule: Select Tuesdays, April – October, 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.Fee: $150 per person ($840 any six dinners)Registration: Call 404-876-5859 ext. 2559 Join the Waitlist See the Full Schedule About Chef Arnaldo Castillo Chef Arnaldo Castillo, owner and executive chef of Tio Lucho’s in Atlanta, Ga. is an enigma born in Peru, raised in the South, and with one foot planted firmly in both cultures.   These distinct worlds carry a heavy hand in culture and flavor, presenting Chef Arnaldo  with a unique opportunity as a culinary chameleon- stick to his formal training, creating  traditional fare from each region or press the boundaries to a point where he is moving  into uncharted territory. As a James Beard Award semifinalist for Best Chef in the  Southeast, he has found his path but he has much to impart from how he got here.   Sharing his story one plate at a time, Castillo’s mission to show Atlantans Peruvian food through a southern lens began long before the Poncey-Highland eatery opened its  doors in 2022. Creator of the popular food pop up, La Chingana, Castillo first show cased Peruvian flavors in the city through sought after ticketed tasting menus, private  dinners, and a la carte pop ups.  Inspired by his father, Luis, who was a cook and caterer, Castillo has been a part of the  restaurant industry since the age of 16. Having worked in a variety of roles along his  culinary journey, he has learned the industry ropes as a server, dishwasher, cook, sous  chef, and chef de cuisine in the kitchens of esteemed Atlanta restaurants including  Minero, Pura Vida, Empire State South and Little Trouble, which he also helped open.   Embarking on the adventure of opening Tio Lucho’s was a dream born after the pan demic when Castillo realized his at-home cooking featured mostly Peruvian inspired  dishes. As executive chef, he thrives in the creative role of developing food and bever age recipes by using seasonal and local or regional products, along with designing and  activating the perfect environment to introduce revelers to Peruvian culture. As owner,  Castillo balances his time in the kitchen with managing day to day operations, oversee ing the team of hospitality professionals, and ensuring a great experience for each  guest who dines at Tio Lucho’s.  A resident of Decatur, Georgia, Castillo and his wife enjoy going on hikes, playing with  their two rescue dogs, and are expecting their first child this spring. With family at the  heart of his personal and professional life, Castillo named Tio Lucho’s as a nod to the nickname of his father who sadly passed away two weeks before the restaurant  opened. Crediting any good luck that has come the restaurant’s way to his father, Castil lo says he has been their patron saint since the beginning.
